Shisha is a embroidery done on the outside of textile for sewing small mirrors to obtain a pretty design. In reality, the term ‘shisha’ means mirrors. This kind of embroidery, often referred to as mirror work, is pretty prevalent in India and its neighboring countries. Initially, components of mica were used to have a reflective surface, but those were subsequently replaced by tiny mirrors. Nowadays, sequins and plastic mirrors may also be used from time to time, but glass mirrors remain used and they are considered to be more pleasing and traditional.

Traditionally, ‘shisha’ is made from blown glass, the rear of which has been painted to be more reflective. Then, it turned out carefully cut or broken. This method is still used along with the final method is called ‘antique shisha.’ Such bits of ‘shisha’ are valued because of the slight flaws that creep in while making glass manually, and also the difference in their size and shape, as a result of hand cutting. ‘Perfect shisha’ or ’embroidery glass’, as it is known as, being made on machines, is thicker and has no imperfections of size or shape.

‘Shisha’ needs to be firmly connected to the cloth in order that the latter can carry the extra weight of the mirror or ‘shisha.’ It works especially well on textile having bold prints in bright colors, where mirrors together with pretty stitches offer a different dimension to the overall design. Mirror embroidery can often be carried out to increase the attractiveness of bags of varying sizes, hangings, clothing and household furnishings. Mirrors form a fundamental element of the complete design. They might form an element of the motifs arranged in geometrical designs or be positioned in the flower.

Simple straight stitches in numerous directions are applied over the periphery in the mirror to secure it together with the fabric. The sides from the mirror are somewhat rough, to enable them to retain the thread together with fabric, thus keeping the mirror in their desired position. Traditionally, the fastening of mirror towards the fabric is performed through stitches only, without using any adhesive or glue. Those decorative stitches over the periphery of the mirror not simply support the mirror in place, but in addition head to form a design component.
