Nicolás Otamendi and Julián Álvarez both start for the Argentina Olympic team against Morocco.
Otamendi and Álvarez have both been included in the starting eleven as is the third overage player Gerónimo Rulli. Argentina Olympic coach Javier Mascherano will start four World Cup champions as Thiago Almada starts in midfield. Here is the Argentina starting eleven:

This was a deja vu of the Paraguay 3.3 game in Preolympic .
One thing is clear. This team is way better than our Tokyo team. Post 0.2, we really showed grit & physicality to dominate & didnt vanish. Moroccoan GK was superb & that delayed the equalizer. Loved the energy Otamendi showed in the end. He was in their penalty area for last 5minutes.
Problem Areas:
Apart from set pieces, Almada didnt do much. Alvarez was so disappointing & will surely bounce back in next game. I felt Ledesma in 2020 was so good compared to Rulli in 2024. Zenon was a total flop & Simeone surely will start over him.
What worked:
Soler & Garcia did fine. Just hoping Soler is not injured. Equi clearly is a starter& great positioning. Medina & Equi will be Boco combo. Beltran troubled their defense at start Echiveri as a super sub is going to be a template for rest of tournament. Simeone injected the much needed energy. Masche’s substitution deserves appreciation.
Medina had great game
Hope Mascherano realizes that he started with a wrong XI. The seniors were very poor. Otamendi and Alvarez are competing for the worst player of the match award. Achraf Hakimi was not far either. But I give it a damn to Hakimi. But Rahimi was the showstealer. Rulli did horrible during 0-1. We are heading for bigger troubles in next couple of matches.
Our players were better in 2nd half. I think we have enough talents. The formation and starting XI were wrong. We should start with Equi Fernandez, Echeverri and Simeone in 4-3-3 formation. Gondou is a great option coming off the bench. Alvarez is just tired coming off Copa but he will fire eventually. It was an entertaining game with an entertaining finish. The penalty was soft. I think VAR felt guilty and gave us the extra time.
I don’t think he looked tired. He looked damn inaccurate. His first touch inside the box, his header inside the box – all were horribly wrong. But he was as usual good in keeping the pressure upfront. He was just left alone because no other from our team did press.
Watching this match what I understood Mascherano don’t have clear idea about this team. This team is ideal for 4-3-3 formation.
Alvarez, Simeone and echeverri should be in the line up along with Equi Fernandez.
Also this defence looks shaky. Mainly left back and CB is our weak position.
Argentina did not need to go to the Olympics with Julian Alvarez,Rulli and Otamendi.Julian Alvarez has issues to sort out with his club career,Rulli I had high hopes for him earlier in his career as for old man Otamendi he has passed his prime.
Argentina can win the Olympics football competition without any over aged players if managed by a good coach that is not Javier Mascherano

This should have been 2-1 to Argentina, that penalty that Morocco had was such a soft penalty.

Simeone has tremendous potential. He is a senior team material. He is equally talented as Garnacho and Carboni.
Simeone should be a starter, he is at least trying
Almada and Julian have zero chemistry. In fact, the entire team lacks chemistry, and the talent level is shockingly mediocre. We must face the reality that we’re no longer producing top talents for the world stage after Messi, Di Maria and Arguero. Our recent U20 players are merely on par with those from Paraguay and Chile. These Moroccan players are better than ours both technically and tactically.

Brilliant comeback by the team. Hats off for coming back from 0.2 & drawing in the last second. The only difference was Morocco goalie was in superb form today. We would have else won the game. The last 5minutes, Otamendi was on the prowl & always in Morocco’s penalty area. For all the Masche haters, his subs were good & timely.
Claudio Tapia and Lionel Messi caused all this that is happening to the youth team by allowing the clueless Javier Mascherano remain as the head coach the guy has absolutely nothing to offer as a coach one failure after the other couldn’t qualify for the under 20 world cup entered through as last minute host he also failed.

Poor start by us. With a display of such low low quality we would not go beyond the group stage. Otamendi as virtually nutmegged!!! Mascherano seems to have no plan. He is trying to use the same template as Scalni – run after your opponent. Not every template works with all teams.
Beltran , almada look good. Alvarez missing for now. Zenon doesn’t look physically strong . Medina & hezze doing a tidy job.
