Maximiliano Meza is set to join River Plate from Monterrey on Tuesday. After a week of waiting and uncertainty, the 31-year-old midfielder will be moving to Marcelo Gallardo’s team.

Martín Demichelis, former River Plate coach until only a week ago and now the brand new Monterrey coach, tried to convince Meza to stay with “Rayados.” According to journalist César Luis Merlo, the former Independiente player had a conversation with Demichelis on Sunday and informed him that, due to personal reasons, he wanted to play in Argentina.

The 2018 Argentine World Cup player will join a long list of River Plate players in the current squad who have either played for the senior national team or the youth national team: Franco Armani, Jeremías Ledesma, Germán Pezzella, Ramiro Funes Mori, Manuel Lanzini, Franco Mastantuono, Claudio Echeverri, and Pablo Solari.

With this mix of experienced players, young talents with huge potential, and the return of coach Marcelo Gallardo, River Plate will aim to lift the Copa Libertadores this season.

  1. We were in such $hitty situation in 2018 that we ended up taking Meza to WC, who had one good game agasint an Italian team that failed to qualify for the world cup, one of the weakest squad in their history! Sampoali, choose this guy Meza over Paredes simply because Paredes misplaced one pass in that match! More importantly, Sampaoli also didnot select Papu gomez who was in the form of his life nor did he select Pezzella and Icardi who were also in their peak and instead he opted Meza ,Pavon, Rojo, Fazio, Salvio, Cabellaro washed up Macherano (China bound) and Higuain (MLS)!

      • Yes, Spain it was, but hopefully Gallardo will use him and rest of the old guard to develop even more Mastantuono, Echeverri and Solari + hopefully even more youngsters with potential talent will emerge as not only from River’, but from the whole Country of ARGENTINA!

    • To be fair to Sampaoli, I too bought into the Meza hype, hook line and sinker infact! This was especially true after his superb performance against Spain.
Those were desperate times, Masch, Biglia, Rojo, Pipita, DiMaria and most of the team was seriously underperforming in the WCQ, 3 coaches (Tata, Bauza and Sampa) in the span of 2 years and things were a mess, hence anybody with an ounce of talent who was performing well was welcomed by most of us. Heck I was totally bought into Pavon from Boca (remember that guy?) as well.

      • Terrible were those time’s indeed as said mostly due 3 different manager’s or maybe only the last 2 and to their player selection, though as said everything was a huge mess and as obviously, when Tata lost 2 Copa final’s and in the end did not get paid by AFA, well, then the real shit hit the fan indeed as Bauza and ”mad man baldy” Sampaoli were brought in, though Sampa did not get maybe, that much time, but more than best thing ever happened as he did not get to continue as were would ARG be now if theese things did not happen, well better not think about it as so terrible were those times indeed!

  2. One of the most overhyped players to everwear the jersy. Baldy non sense was exposed in that tournament. He kicked Sergio Romero, benched and overlooked deserving players like Papu Gomez, Pezzella. Even Lautaro was legit enough to be selected.

Yet it was a blessing in disguise as it was a turning point in breaking the Jinx by opening the door for Scaloni.
