Even when a company has high quality control standards they are limited by the materials they buy and the select parts that almost always have to be outsourced. It seems that almost all the fans, compressors and temperature sensors in refrigerators come from the same factory. This combined with low quality raw materials and everyone trying to cut costs makes the outcome inevitable. You are going to get an inferior product and the days of your twenty year old appliances are a memory from the past.

The answer here is quite simple- get to know the practice of buying graded appliances. When home and kitchen appliances, such as fridge freezers or washing machines or ovens, are labeled graded, this means that they have a slight blemish or imperfection that does not impact the way it functions. It can be a packaging damage or a minor dent or even a small scratch at the back part of it that you can’t even notice. Graded appliances are also called factory second or imperfect appliances.

Pay attention to your lights. Usually, bulbs with higher power ratings are installed in areas that do not need it. Use the lowest wattage needed for a specific function. You can also choose to use CFL type bulbs to further save on your home energy.

Never overload outlets. When using an appliance that uses up a lot of energy, you should avoid plugging them near outlets that are used by other major appliances. Position your home appliances strategically so that the major ones can have their own electrical outlets. Smaller appliances can be plugged in anywhere. Just make sure that you avoid octopus connections even for small equipments.

Ensure that your home is safe by checking on your smoke detectors every now and then. If you find there is something wrong with the detectors, have them checked right away by an electrician.
