So finally an essay, a dissertation and a thesis all share several traits:

– They’re literary compositions; this is to say that they are written documents or pieces of text.

– They all reflect somehow the author’s standpoint.

– They are based on some sort of study.

– They are all talking some form of subject or subject matter.

– They can be used as a way of academic testing.
