The Argentina U20 national team are back in the semi finals of the U20 World Cup for the first time in 18 years.
Diego Placente’s team won 2-0 against Mexico in the quarter finals and will play Colombia in the semi finals on Wednesday. This marks the first time that Argentina are in the semi finals of the U20 World Cup since 2007 where they won 3-0 against Chile.
The starting eleven for that match was the following:
Sergio Romero; Emiliano Insúa, Matías Cahais, Federico Fazio, Gabriel Mercado; Éver Banega, Claudio Yacob, Maximiliano Moralez; Ángel Di María, Sergio Agüero and Pablo Piatti
Ángel Di María, Claudio Yacob and Maximiliano Moralez scored the goals for Argentina. The team would go on to win the 2007 U20 World Cup, winning 2-1 against Czech Republic with Sergio Agüero and Mauro Zárate scoring.
Argentina have won the most U20 World Cup tournaments, winning it six times with the last time being in 2007 against Czech Republic in the final.
After a long wait post Pekermann era, Placente has been the next impactful coach at youth level. Miles to go with a semi & hopefully final match. But Placente with 2 last four finishes in U17 & now U20 WC has finally got some mojo back in our youth set up. Hopefully next Olympics also we do well. While Pieranni & Carrizo out for semis . Colombia also losing their top striker ( Villarreal ) & their RB ( Sarabia). So suspension/ injuries have same impact for both sides. We played Colombia twice in the Conembol qualifiers earlier this year with a win a draw. Just that we had Echiverri & Ruberto then while Colombia has managed to get most of those players. Will be a solid contest for sure.

Usually when a country wins the world cup they continue to produce good and competent players for next few years! The enthusiasm, motivation & dedication at the grassroot level becomes different! I see Argentina again producing army of world class players that will dominate the world football like Brazilian, French and Spanish players have in the past 2 decades!
