Marcos Rojo set to join Racing Club from Boca Juniors

Marcos Rojo is set to become a new signing for Racing Club after officially parting ways with Boca Juniors on Friday morning. The 35-year-old defender leaves Boca as a free agent and will sign a one-year productivity-based contract with Racing, per reports.

Rojo played 118 matches and scored nine goals during his time at Boca, but after falling out of favor with the coaching staff, his contract—originally set to expire in December—was terminated early. Racing had already shown interest in Rojo, with sporting director Sebastián Saja previously in contact with the former Argentina international. His arrival became possible once his exit from Boca was finalized.

Racing is moving quickly to register Rojo before the 6 p.m. deadline for Copa Libertadores squad changes ahead of their Round of 16 clash against Peñarol on Tuesday. Although it remains uncertain whether Rojo will be available for this round, Racing can still provisionally register up to three players by Monday at noon.

The productivity-based contract reflects concerns over Rojo’s injury history, which includes 11 muscle tears and an ACL injury during his time at Boca.

However, Costas will need to manage not only Rojo’s fitness but also his disciplinary record, as the defender was known for red cards and controversial comments at Boca. Still, he showed signs of consistency earlier this year, completing 12 consecutive matches for the first time in a Boca shirt.

According to TyC Sports, Rojo had initially explored a return to Estudiantes, his boyhood club, even contacting Juan Sebastián Verón personally. But strained relations with fans and internal club dynamics ultimately made that move impossible. Now, Rojo will wear a third shirt in Argentine football — Estudiantes, Boca, and now Racing — as he looks to write a new chapter in Avellaneda.
