Argentina’s U20 team continues its perfect run at the World Cup. With goals from Maher Carrizo and Mateo Silvetti, the Albiceleste defeated Mexico 2–0 in the quarterfinals, advancing to the semifinals for the first time since 2007.
Maher Carrizo opened the scoring for Argentina after pouncing on a rebound from the Mexican goalkeeper. Later in the match, substitute Mateo Silvetti, who came on for Sarco in the second half, used his strength to win the ball and fired a powerful shot to make it 2–0 for Argentina.
Under the guidance of Diego Placente, the team once again impressed with its dynamic play and collective strength—hallmarks of their campaign so far. Argentina have now recorded five consecutive victories, ensuring they’ll play all seven matches of the tournament.
Their next challenge will come on Wednesday, when they face Colombia, who beat Spain 3–2 earlier on Saturday.

Nicely done Placente and his boys, first semi since 2009! Holy hell it’s been a long while.
The match was nicely played and Mexico hardly troubled Argentina (apart from the needless fouls).
Carrizo played a good match but if he’s not available in the next match then I think Subiabre would fill in nicely.
I said before that the person I’m watching the most in this tournament is Placente and thus far he’s done superbly and is now a legit option to replace Scaloni if the latter decides to hang it up after 2026.
Placente is now with Montoro and possibly Carrizo for the semis and I’m really curious to see what he’ll do.
Vamos Argentina!!!
scaloni can learn from placente .placente’s 532 formation is different to scalonis . Perhaps scaloni can use one tall defensive midfield as an extra CB together with Gonzalez and simeone as two wingers .then it will be 532 for defense and 352 for attack .at the same time you can easily change in to 433 ,you can only move the extra cb forward as a proper DM that s ok. as a result Barrenechea will be the ideal extra CB just like tomas perez
Placente is very clever using 523 to beat Mexico. actually mexico which I think is a relatively strong team .Our team didn’t have too much ball possession but our counter attack is very effective . Once again I definitely support placente take up the head coach job of national team once scaloni leave
Barbi :a decent goal keeper should be national team material
Ramirez :Very good CB ,strong ,fast,Skilful
Tomas Perez : as a defensive midfield he can be used as an extra CB ,good game
Gorosito : he fully concentrated on defending but need to improve a bit .
Soler : Attack is better than defense ,still long way to go
Pierani :Got injured early
Villabal : Just moderate CB but had an assist which is out of expectation .
Acuna : Slightly disappointed, he was sharp at U17 but lack of improvement
Delgado : Irreplaceable
Maher Carrizo : Proper winger ,fast surely a national team material.
Sarco : Not many chance since our team is rather preservative
Prestianni : best player ,almost all attack comes from him .new papu gomez
silvetti: Scorer but he isn’t fast enough .actually Sarco may be better
Subiare : Disappointing, lack of improvement .
Carrizo yellow was harsh. Placente should have attempted a review on that one knowing the consequence. But other players were picking cards foolishly. But solid victory against a team in top form. Colombia awaits. Sarco subbing early was a surprise. But ended up being a good move again. Placente has been spot on with subbing
This was a professional victory, we did not shine, but were lethal in key moments. Mexico huffed and puffed but created nothing. But we lost Carrizo and Pierani…
