Champions League Round of 16 draw: Argentine players remaining

The draw for the Champions League Round of 16 took place and seven of the eight ties all include Argentine players.

A total of 11 Argentine players remain and of the 11, only one of them has won the Champions League. Julián Álvarez is that one player and he with Manchester City will look to retain their trophy after being draw with Mateo Tanlongo and FC Copenhagen in the Round of 16 draw.

One tie has four Argentine World Cup winners, including a finalist from last season. Lautaro Martínez and Inter have been drawn against Rodrigo De Paul, Ángel Correa and Nahuel Molina of Atletico Madrid. Diego Simeone will continue his quest to win the trophy that he has come close to lifting in previous years.

Another draw involving an Italian club against a club from Spain is Gio Simeone and Napoli against FC Barcelona. The final Spanish club with an Argentine player is Nico Paz and Real Madrid against RB Leipzig.

Taty Castellanos and Lazio will play one of the favorites in Bayern Munich and Alan Varela with FC Porto play Arsenal. The final tie and the only one that does not include any Argentine players is PSG against Real Sociedad.

While the draw took place in December, the matches will be taking place in February and March. Here are the ties for the Champions League:

FC Porto: Alan Varela vs. Arsenal

Napoli: Gio Simeone vs. FC Barcelona

PSG vs. Real Sociedad

Inter: Lautaro Martínez vs. Atletico Madrid: Rodrigo De Paul, Ángel Correa, Nahuel Molina

PSV: Walter Benítez vs. Borussia Dortmund

Lazio: Taty Castellanos vs. Bayern Munich

Copenhagen: Mateo Tanlongo vs. Manchester City: Julián Álvarez

RB Leipzig vs. Real Madrid: Nico Paz

Argentina win the 2022 World Cup, one year later

Argentina won the 2022 World Cup on this day exactly one year ago.

December 18, 2022 produced what is widely regarded as one of the, if not the greatest World Cup final ever. Argentina vs. France, a battle for the third star. Lionel Messi vs. Kylian Mbappe, the greatest player of his generation and for many ever up against one of the greatest right now. The youngest coach of the tournament against a two time World Cup winner.

A final which produced six goals and drama the likes of which we have never seen in a World Cup final. The stories and the comments from players, coaches and fans continue to come out a year after the win.

Lionel Messi scored twice and Angel Di Maria scored what is considered to be one of the nicest goals ever scored in a World Cup final. For France, Kylian Mbappe scored a hattrick.

Emiliano Martinez made the biggest save of his football career in what would have been the last kick of the match on Kolo Muani. The match would go to penalty kicks and Martinez would make a save and France would miss one with Gonzalo Montiel taking the penalty and Argentina won the World Cup.

Lautaro Martínez scored and reached 15 league goals with Inter in their 2-0 win vs. Lazio.

Martínez started the match and scored once more to continue his great form. The Argentine intercepted a pass from the defender, he ran inside the Lazio penalty area, dribble around the goalkeeper and chipped the defender to score and give Inter the 1-0 lead.

The Argentine leads the league with 15 goals in 16 matches and he has four assists. He has 10 goals and two assists in his last 10 league matches.

He would dedicate his goal, showing a t-shirt that reads “Fuerza Bahía Blanca”, in dedication to his home town which was hit by a storm, killing and injuring people.

Taty Castellanos was brought on as a substitute for Lazio in the second half.

Lucas Beltrán scored for Fiorentina in their 1-0 win vs. Verona.

Beltrán reached two league goals for the season with Fiorentina, bringing his tally to four goals for the season. A loose ball inside the penalty area fell to the Argentine who would score to give Fiorentina the 1-0 lead.

Lucas Martínez Quarta started the match for Fiorentina but was substituted out. Nicolás González did not play and is still out due to an injury.

Roberto Pereyra scored for Udinese in their 2-2 draw vs. Sassuolo.

Pereyra had a goal and an assist for Udinese, reaching two goals for the season. With the score at 0-0, Pereyra played a cross into the penalty area which found Lorenzo Lucca and he would score to give Udinese the 1-0 lead.

The Argentine would get the second goal of the match. The 32 year old would get the ball inside the penalty area and his effort from close range would beat the goalkeeper.

Nehuén Pérez also started the match as did Martín Payero and Payero would get red carded.
