On the same day the Champions League group stage begins, Argentine midfielder Facundo Buonanotte has been added to Chelsea’s list of eligible players for the tournament.

Buonanotte, who joined the London club on a season-long loan in September, was initially not part of the main “List A” squad submitted by Chelsea. However, UEFA rules allow teams to replace players in case of injuries, and Buonanotte has now been included following the absence of Dario Essugo. The Portuguese midfielder underwent surgery last week for a muscular problem and will be sidelined for several weeks.

The 20-year-old, who began his career at Rosario Central before moving to Brighton and spending time at Leicester, becomes the third Argentine available for Chelsea in this year’s competition. He joins Enzo Fernández, a key figure in the team, and Alejandro Garnacho, who also arrived during the recent transfer window.

Since his arrival, Buonanotte has featured once for Chelsea, playing 45 minutes in the 2-2 Premier League draw against Brentford last weekend. Enzo Maresca’s side will open their Champions League campaign on Wednesday against Bayern Munich.

Atlético Madrid will begin their UEFA Champions League campaign on Wednesday with a difficult visit to Liverpool, but they will do so without two of their Argentine players. Julián Álvarez has been left out of the traveling squad due to a knee injury, while Thiago Almada is also unavailable after recent fitness issues with the Argentina national team.

Álvarez, who had provided an assist in Atlético’s 2-0 win against Villarreal last weekend, suffered discomfort in his right knee during the play that led to the opening goal. Although he completed the first half, he did not return for the second and has since been working under medical supervision. Tests confirmed a mild sprain, and the medical staff recommended not risking him for the European debut.

The Argentines Juan Musso, Nahuel Molina, Giuliano Simeone, and Nicolás González have been called up by Diego Simeone.

The Champions League begins on Tuesday and one of the mathches involves two Argentine World Cup winning center backs. Tottenham Hostpur will host Villarreal in the Champions League on Tuesday as Juan Foyth will play against Cristian Romero and his former club.

Romero spoke at a press conference on Monday before the match and mentioned Juan Foyth. Here is what he had to say:

“I think I get a bad rep. I was taught to defend like this in Argentina. I love this game. I have this inside. I don’t have anything against any player I come up against.

“I just defend this shirt and badge. This is my style of play. It is in my blood to play like this. You wouldn’t change your style of play given where I have got to in the game.

“I know him really well. We played together in the U20s and U23s. We managed to spend time together in the national team. He is a great guy and a top player. He was here as well so it will be a special game for him.”

Juan Foyth spent three years playing with Tottenham Hotspur and has since gone on to win the Europa League with Villarreal. Speaking about playing in the Champions League and against Cristian Romero, here is what Foyth had to say:

“I am very happy to be able to compete again in one of the best competitions with Villarreal. I hope we can give our fans something to celebrate.

“Our forwards will have to endure one of the best center backs in the world. He’s a great player and a great person.”
