Willy CABALLERO or Franco ARMANI to Argentina squad

One of Willy CABALLERO or Franco ARMANI is expected to make the Argentina squad for next month’s matches.

The third place goalkeeping position is still up for grabs, with Argentina coach Jorge SAMPAOLI still undecided between Chelsea man Willy CABALLERO and River Plate’s Franco ARMANI, according to TyC Sports. One of the two will make the squad for the matches against Italy and Spain next month.

In Willy CABALLERO’s case, he has never been capped for the Argentina National Team. Although the former Manchester City goalkeeper did win an U20 World Cup with his country back in 2001 with that legendary squad. He was in excellent form heading into the 2014 World Cup and was knocking on the door of the National Team but then coach Alejandro SABELLA opted to go with a trio of Sergio ROMERO, Agustin ORION and Mariano ANDUJAR in Brazil.

Franco ARMANI

For Franco ARMANI, he’s a Copa Libertadores winner having won it back in 2016 and also has a Recopa Sudamericana medal from 2017 hanging in his cabinet. Agustin MARCHESIN and Geronimo RULLI’s spots in the Argentina National Team just got that much more difficult to maintain.

If you missed int, former Banfield player and Itay capped Ezequiel SCHELOTTO could receive a call-up to the Argentina squad as well for next month.

  5. caballero and armani both are good .for three GK spot 1.Romeri.2.caballero.3.Armani.
    should be selected.We don’t need to consider others these three are the best .

  6. It’s refreshing to see Sampa considering Caballero. I was worried about his silence on the gk position. While Romero has always performed well for us, he gives away the ball against high pressing teams.

  8. We need a dedicated number 5 given that our ball playing CMF are not that efficient in defending. I think it is due to the Argentinian culture of playing a 5. Germany can defend with Kroos and Bastian(a former winger). But our Banega, Lo Celso and Perez can not defend against Nigeria. We need a number 5.

    Biglia is in a good shape and doing good lately. But I think that even in his 34, Masche is better than Biglia. Masche has better passing, far better passing, better defending and a leader. Biglia is weak hearted, goes invisible in big games. We always notice Higuain, but watch 3 finals again and you will be able to see that biglia was one those flops. Masche takes the number 5.

    Then comes ball playing midfielders. Lo Celso is inexperienced, we can’t start him. Lanzini is injury prone and he will be completely new to the setup.

    Banega is an amazing midfielder if he drops deep. Sampaoli is using Perez, while perez covers a lot of ground, but he particularly does not offer anything special. Paredes is one of the most in form midfielder we have and he is great at forward passing.

    If we go for a Banega-Masche-Paredes midfield, we will have lot fluidity and forward passes while defensively not in compromising position. Both Banega an Paredes can contribute to defense while being potent passer of the ball, both can shoot and good dribblers. Banega has one problem though: stamina.

    IMO, Lamela should be picked ahead of Lo Celso. Lamela is a relentless presser. He has great stamina while being a dribbler.

    Di Maria , Aguero, Messi all of them are in good form. All they need is ball in dangerous positions.

    And back four is a must. This 3-5-2 or 3-4-3 does not work. The wingers remain isolated while in defense we remain vulnerable. 4-3-3 or 4-4-2 is the way to go.
    Otamendi, Mercado are starters. Mercado is not flashy, but he always do well with NT. Rojo needs more playing time, if Mori does not regain full form in time Rojo should be paired with Otamendi, Rojo has pace and grit. Then Left back position can be tried with Tagliafico or Acuna.

    We have options, not many, but we have them. Sampaoli must act accordingly. He must see that 3-5-2 does not produce goals while being defensively inefficient. He must see that teams problem is not Higuain Vs Icardi or Lautaro Martinez but the midfield and back four. We can do a lot better than current midfield. He also must see that players who are not comfortable with the ball(Biglia) are not suitable for possession football.

  9. With 16 weeks to go to the WC, only a few players are sure starters. Having many good players is a luxury but how can we grow as a team if we keep changing line ups?
    Caballero is welcome, but Schelotto? What a disgrace! The guy can’t even run normally. Call Bustos instead.

    • I think the same. Only Messi, Otamendi and probably Romero, Di Maria are automatic starters. We don’t know our defence, midfield, No.9. I have real doubts wheter it’s possible to build golden team within such short time.

  11. Willy is 5 years older and an inch shorter but has been involved in many big games and has a HUGE chip on his shoulder.

    As much as I wanted Rulli to own that #1 spot, only to be disappointed time and time again whenever I watched him……..nothing special with a weak psyche.
