Alejo Véliz, Luka Romero and Máximo Perrone scored for the Argentina U20 team in their 3-0 win vs. Guatemala at the U20 World Cup.
It was a reasonably comfortable win for the Argentina U20 national team as they made it two wins out of two to top Group A in the standings. Javier Mascherano’s team were in control of the match and it was a goal in the first half by Véliz which opened teh scoring.
Juan Gauto started the match in place of Brian Aguirre and it was Gauto who would get the assist on the first goal. A cross into the penalty area by Gauto found Véliz and the 19 year old would leap up and score a header, his second goal of the U20 World Cup.
Gauto now on two goals in the tournament, both of his goals have been headers. With the score at 1-0, Gómes Gerth made a big save to keep the lead.
An effort from outside of the penalty area but Gómes Gerth would make the save and he would tip the ball over the bar. The match would go to half time with Argentina ahead.
Guatemala would be down to 10 men following two yellow cards to Carlos Vargas early in the second half. Minutes after that, Mascherano would make three substitutions.
The first injury was possibly due to injury as Valentín Barco was being kicked and fouled the entire match and was replaced by Román Vega. Luka Romero would also come on for Matías Soulé and Ignacio Maestro Puch for Alejo Véliz.
A nice build up play by Javier Mascherano’s team and Luka Romero would unleash a shot from outside of the penalty area and beat the goalkeeper to give Argentina the 2-0 lead. That goal was his first of the U20 World Cup.
Federico Redondo was substituted in for Valentín Gómez after the second goal.
Gómes Gerth would make another great save. With a ball inside the penalty area, the initial effort by Guatemala was deflected off an Argentine and Gómes Gerth was quick and his reflexes were sharp as he went down and made the save from close range.
Minutes after that, Argentina would also get a red card. Tomás Avilés, who was already on a yellow card, would be red carded. A foul outside of the penalty area and Avilés would get his second yellow of the match.
With 10 minutes of injury time, Máximo Perrone would make it 3-0 for Argentina. An initial effort by Maestro Puch was saved by the goalkeeper and Perrone would score the rebound.
Argentina U20 now top the group with two wins and are on six points. They play New Zealand on Friday.

My favourite would be the third goal because that was the goal which came out of solid teamwork. The first two goals were of individual brilliance, specially Luka’s goal. Such brilliance would always remain rare and welcome. But teamwork is essential to win cups. We have seen what the big boys did through teamwork last year. Still I feel this team is not putting enough urgency in their pressing. They shouldn’t have allowed that Guatemalan player take the shot from distance which could have easily found the net hadn’t there been the sublime save from Gomes. Hope, the team shows more solidarity and urgency as they progress in the tournament. Next game would be a real test for Mascherano as New Zealand is a better team compared the first two opponents. But one thing we have to be happy about – we have quite a few bright stars in the team. If they are lucky to play under the right coaches in the future, they would do wonders like Alvarez.
Luka’s goal reminded me of Mexico. That left footed shot by Messi in the WC. 💪🏼
