Argentina U20 coach Javier Mascherano: “I am happy for qualifying”

Argentina U20 coach Javier Mascherano spoke about qualifying for the Round of 16 of the U20 World Cup.

Javier Mascherano has his Argentina U20 national team on six points, winning two of their first two matches at the tournament. A 2-1 win vs. Uzbekistan and a 3-0 win vs. Guatemala, they have qualified for the Round of 16 at the U20 World Cup.

Mascherano spoke to the media following the match. Here is what he had to say:

“We needed to build on a lot of good things we did in the first game. I am happy for qualifying.

“We are going to need everyone and it’s important that they get more minutes.

Argentina is to take it one game at a time. In three days, we will play a very difficult match against New Zealand. We have to be calm and enjoy this moment because it was a test for us and the boys.

“If a national team is at a World Cup, it’s for a reason. No rival is easy.

“I am really enjoying all of this even though it’s a new process. I think my role is to accompany them and to give them calmness.”

  1. It seems like playing at home really matters. Masche’s team play the best futbol. It reminds me the game of Argentina vs Poland. We dominated from the first minute.

Gerth: Has been inconsistent but today he played his best.

Giay the worst today, but he is not a bad RB.

Aviles: I like this guy. Wearing number 13 playing like the young Romero who also wears number 13. His first yellow was unnecessary. The second yellow, he needed that otherwise Guatemala would have scored.

    Gomez: good today.

Barco: I like his confidence a lot. He is not scared to take his man and send crosses. Something that not even Acuna has that mentality. He needs to work on his crosses but at 18 to have such confidence is insane. He’ll have a long career with Argentina for sure.

All the DM I have been impressed:

Tanlongo the classic DM. Masche uses him like most teams used Masche in the past. He sees him as the reincarnation of him. He played good as CB too.
Perrone is more of a box to box. Today he got a goal and an assist. A bit like MacAllister.

Redondo man… I love this kid. As the biggest fan on earth of his father, I know there are a lot of players trying to be like his dad such as Gago, Cambiasso. But no one is more similar to his father than… his own son. The way he controls the ball, his passing ability and his key passes accuracy is just amazing. 2 times in 2 games he delivered perfect through pass ball. Today it ended up the Perrone’s goal.

Miramon is a unique DM. He is a DM w/ a good dribbling skill and ball control. So all 4 DM have different skillset.

Carboni? I am pleasantly surprised by him. A super star in the making for sure. We witnessed the greatness of Echeverri for the U17. This dude plays just like him, just as good. Amazing. If Argentina won the WC U20, I have no doubt he’ll be the best player. His shooting technique is great too.

Gauto is fine. I always knew he and Veliz would be a perfect match as Gauto loves to cross the ball. Veliz is good in the air.

Soule playing out of position but still look good. I’d like him to play at his natural position RW sometimes in this tournament.

Veliz is effective. Not wasting chances. Typical 9.

Luka was one of the best. 1 goal and another great shot hitting the post. He plays w/ a chip on his shoulder.

3rd game, Masche will make a lot of changes as we already qualify. And we will likely see Redondo, Miramon, Puch, Luka starting.

  3. @gastonedul: “Lionel Scaloni starts a new cycle, chapter in June with the possibility of having some new faces in the squad. The list will be presented in the coming weeks and there will be around 30 players.” 🇦🇷

I’m 100% support on this , Scaloni and co must start new cycle that is the way forward.

  4. The chemistry of the team is being formed during the tournament, considering many of the players who played during the previous sudamericano were “dismissed” and replaced by the current crop… for a large part.

  5. Reaching the final 4 would be an over achievement for this squad, but with fans support and a little bit of luck who knows, it’s youth football.
