Argentina beat Brazil at the Olympics, 15 years later

On this day in 2008, Argentina defeated Brazil in the semi finals of the Olympics.

It has already been 15 years since Argentina eliminated Brazil in Beijing with two goals from Sergio Agüero and one by Juan Román Riquelme. Argentina Olympic coach Sergio Batista started the following eleven players:

Sergio Romero, Ezequiel Garay, Fabián Monzón, Pablo Zabaleta, Nicolás Pareja, Fernando Gago, Javier Mascherano, Ángel Di María, Juan Román Riquelme, Lionel Messi and Sergio Agüero.

It was Sergio Romero’s first start at the Olympics as he was substituted on for Oscar Ustari against the Netherlands. Romero would keep a clean sheet at the Olympics.

The first goal came through an Angel Di Maria assist as he crossed the ball inside the penalty area and Agüero would hit it with his chest and score to give Argentina the 1-0 lead.

Lionel Messi would play a part in the second goal as he would play a pass to Ezequiel Garay and he would pass it into the penalty area and Agüero would score from close range.

Agüero would play a role in the third goal as he was taken down inside the penalty area and Argentina were awarded a penalty kick. It was Riquelme who took it and he would aim towards the middle and score to make it 3-0 for Argentina.
