The Argentina Olympic team lost 1-0 vs. Guinea in their final match before the Olympics.
Argentina Olympic coach Javier Mascherano has all of his players after Copa America champions Nicolás Otamendi, Julián Álvarez and Gerónimo Rulli joined the team earloer in the week. The team played their final match before the start of the Olympics against Guinea. Here was the starting eleven:
Rulli; Luján, Di Césare, Otamendi, Amione; Almada, Hezze, Medina; Zenón, Gondou, Beltrán
Mascherano made changes during the match, bringing on Leandro Brey, Joaquín García, Giuliano Simeone, Julio Soler, Claudio Echeverri and Julián Álvarez.
Argentina have been drawn in Group B with Morocco, Iraq and Ukraine. They will play the first match on July 24 vs. Morocco, their second on July 27 against Iraq and on July 30 against Ukraine.
The key to Olympics success will be which team has high levels of endurance & bench strength. The matches happen in a gap of 2 days & final has a 3 day gap. If France, Argentina, Spain top their group, Argentina only need to meet France or Spain in final. So the draw looks favorable for us. Group is a bit tough with Morocco & Ukraine both having good teams. Morocco has 5-6 NT level players including PSG’s star player Achraf Hakimi . The first match will be key. In Tokyo we lost to Australia in opener & could never get back to rhythm.
Against Guinea?! How is Mascherano (all love and respect for the incredible player that he was) still managing the future of Argentina?
Maybe they went easy & overage players settling in. I would not read too much on this friendly result. I am hopeful we will have a good run in this olympics.
Mascherano is not a winner. When will AFA realize this? People think he was a great DM, but I never understood why, as Arturo Vidal in his prime was worth 3-4 Mascheranos. We are now blessed with midfield players, especially DMs, who can open up the game with one special pass. Mascherano is now a coach, just like he was as a player: making people believe he is better than he actually is (the Draymond Green of Argentina).
Under 23 needs a real coach (Peckerman style). When they win gold, our players get sold to bigger clubs. When they lose, no one looks at them, like they would Brazil.
