On this day twenty years ago, Argentina won 3-1 against Brazil with Hernán Crespo scoring twice and Juan Román Riquelme scoring a memorable goal.
June 8, 2005, José Pekerman’s Argentina qualified for the 2006 World Cup with a 3-1 win against Brazil. Lucho González would play the pass in to Crespo who would score three minutes into the match to give Argentina the 1-0 lead.
At 1-0, it was Juan Román Riquelme who would score the goal of the match. He would start it all with a back heel flick in the air and the ball would get back to him where his left footed effort from distance would beat Dida for Argentina’s second goal of the match.
With Argentina leading 2-0, it was a short corner kick taken by Riquelme. He would pass it to Javier Saviola and Saviola with a low cross into the penalty area which found Crespo who scored a header for his second goal.
Brazil would score one goal but it was Argentina with the 3-1 win. Here was the line-up for the match:
Abbondanzieri; Sorín, Heinze, Ayala, Coloccini; Kily González, Mascherano, Lucho González; Riquelme; Crespo, Saviola
Javier Zanetti and Carlos Tevez were both substituted on with Germán Lux, Gabriel Milito, Lucas Bernardi, Pablo Aimar and César Delgado on the bench.
