Nicolás Otamendi, Enzo Barrenechea and Gianluca Prestianni win Super Cup with Benfica

Nicolás Otamendi, Enzo Barrenechea, and Gianluca Prestianni were all part of Benfica’s 1-0 victory over Sporting CP, as the club claimed the 2025 Portuguese Super Cup (Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira).

Otamendi, wearing the captain’s armband, played the full 90 minutes and lifted his sixth Portuguese Super Cup and fourth title with Benfica. It was also the 27th trophy of his professional career. Barrenechea made his official debut, while Prestianni came off the bench in the second half as the Lisbon side kicked off the season with silverware.

Greek striker Vangelis Pavlidis scored the match’s only goal in the 50th minute at Estádio do Algarve, seizing on a loose ball in the box. The win marked a strong start to the post-Di María era under coach Bruno Lage, with new signings like Richard Ríos also making their debut.

Benfica now holds 10 Super Cup titles, surpassing Sporting’s 9, though still behind FC Porto’s 24.

Most decorated Argentine players in history:
Lionel Messi – 46 titles
Ángel Di María – 36 titles
Luis González – 31 titles
Carlos Tévez – 30 titles
Franco Armani and Nicolás Otamendi – 27 titles

  1. Just want to share few thoughts about our defense in 2026 WC. My choice for RB is Agustin Giay, two CB could be Cuti Romero and Belardi/Lomonaco, LB may be Julio Soler. Medina, Licha, Otamendi Valentine Barco may be the subs. Does anyone have recent performance update of Mariano Troilo of CA Belgrano? One concern is the experience or the flamboyancy of the whole defense line, please share your opinion…

  2. Congrats to Benfica! Good to see all the Argentinians perform. I hope Prestianni can proof himself this season.

Btw, Santiago Hidalgo transfers to FC Toulouse for 2.5 Mio €. At the moment he’s quite far from Albiceleste material but career-wise, this could be a good team & league to improve himself & grow.
