On this day in 2009, Martín Palermo scored for Argentina in a 2-1 win against Peru.

On October 10, 2009, the Argentina national team hosted Peru in a World Cup qualifying match at El Monumental. Diego Maradona’s team needed a win to go into the last World Cup qualifying match against Uruguay.

Maradona named the following starting eleven:

Sergio Romero; Jonás Guttiérez, Rolando Schiavi, Gabriel Heinze, Emiliano Insúa; Enzo Pérez, Javier Mascherano, Ángel Di María, Pablo Aimar; Lionel Messi and Gonzalo Higuaín

Pablo Aimar had returned to the Argentina national team and Gonzalo Higuaín got his first start for the team. Higuaín would score Argentina’s first goal as the rain started to come down over the stadium.

Peru would draw level in injury time. Maradona had substituted Palermo into the match and Argentina were awarded a corner kick.

The ball fell to Palermo in the rain and he scored to give Argentina the 2-1 lead. Argentina would win and everyone would celebrate with Palermo being the hero.
