Julián Álvarez scores for Atlético Madrid in 2-1 win vs. Inter

Atlético de Madrid defeated Inter 2–1 at the Metropolitano in Matchday 5 of the UEFA Champions League, with several Argentine players involved on both sides. Julián Álvarez opened the scoring for Diego Simeone’s team, while Lautaro Martínez captained Inter in Madrid.

Álvarez put Atlético ahead early in the match after taking advantage of a loose ball inside the box. The play was initially ruled out for a possible handball in the buildup, but after a VAR review confirmed that the ball had not struck the arm of an Atlético player, the goal was awarded.

With this goal, Álvarez continues his strong continental record. He now has three goals in the current edition, having previously scored against Eintracht Frankfurt and Union SG. Across his 20 starts in the Champions League, the Argentine striker has accumulated 18 goals and seven assists.

For Atlético, Diego Simeone once again relied on a strong Argentine presence. Juan Musso, Nahuel Molina and Giuliano Simeone were in the starting lineup, while Nicolás González entered in the second half. On the opposite side, Lautaro Martínez led Inter as the team’s main reference in attack.

  1. Tbh the last truly good and consistent right-back we had was Zabaleta. Since he left, we’ve tried multiple players in that position, but very few have performed at a consistently high level. Molina and Montiel had outstanding World Cups, but both have dropped off significantly since then.

On the opposite flank, Tagliafico has been a regular presence. We haven’t produced any left-back capable of displacing him, even though he’s quite limited going forward , which is probably why he’s spent most of his career in Europe’s second-tier leagues. Acuña was brought in to offer more attacking aspect, but even he wasn’t much of a threat either. Tagliafico’s longevity in the team has been amazing!

    • Gabriel Mercado’s performance in Copa América 2016 was amazing. He was a late bloomer. Jose Luis Gomez was the one I had the most hope for after Zanetti and Zabaleta, but injuries devastated him, just like Lanzini.

  2. Happy Thanksgiving to all. Grab your favorite beverage, eat some Oranges and Apples (from MG) and enjoy this.

  3. Calm down my friend. Everyone has off nights. Sometimes there’s more to it than we are aware of. We just need to remain calm and human. Be kind to all no matter what. God bless 🙏🏼

  4. Molina is finished. The guy is a complete disaster. He seems like he forgot how to play football. Good luck, Mr. Scaloni.
