CONMEBOL and UEFA directives to meet on Thursday to decide date and venue for Finalissima

Per reports, CONMEBOL and UEFA directives will hold a key meeting this Thursday to discuss the date and location of the Finalissima between Argentina and Spain. Miami had emerged as one of the possible locations, but that option has already been ruled out. The Hard Rock Stadium will be hosting the Miami Open (tennis tournament) during that period, making it unavailable for the Finalissima.

The Finalissima was originally scheduled to take place on March 27 at the Lusail Stadium in Qatar. However, the situation is now under review due to the escalating conflict in the Middle East, which has raised concerns about security in the region.

Football activity in Qatar has already been suspended. The Qatar Football Association announced the immediate halt of all domestic competitions and explained that new dates will only be confirmed once safety conditions are fully guaranteed.

Because of this situation, CONMEBOL and UEFA are evaluating alternative options for both the date and the venue of the match.

  1. We absolutely need this game as the previous games were all against weaker teams. We need to verify if we can still compete with the strongest sides in the world. Yesterday I watched the semi final in the Copa del Rey, Barcelona ruled the pitch completely and Atletico were with their backs against the wall. The speed at which Barca players knock the ball around could be a major issue for us as many players are beyond their peak (Otamendi, Paredes, De Paul, Molina, Tagliafico, Messi) or struggle with form or injuries. Quite a few younger players disappoint (Mastantuono, Guliano Simeone (terrible yesterday). With just 5 players (Dibu, Licha, Enzo, Nico Paz and Alexis) at top level, the base is rather small for success. The finalissima will make it clear whether we can continu with the current squad or that new blood has to be brought in with just a few months remaining.
