there was a time when messi was vilified. there were calls for him to leave the team in some parts of the country , he was “pecho frio”, etc…. but he gave everything for the shirt. im proud of the entire team.

To my best knowledge Almada didn’t played single minute in the final, Messi full time – so it’s more like Messi betrayed himself (no opportunities created, no shots). Of the trio Enzo, Alexis, De Paul actually Fernandez is the only one deserving to get more chances – at least he showed warrior character till the end and is still young. Last but not least Argentina suffers constant deficiency of players who outside the penalty box can create long shoot danger. Enzo and Barco training together is also opportunity to exploit.
Messi carried a last 8/16 level team to the WC final literally alone, out of the box shooting is laughable overrated, 5% scoring chance avg., a team have to create big chances inside the box not nonsense long range shooting (1/20 a goal) statistically. Btw Messi maybe the greatest out of the box shooter ever. Paredes, Enzo, Macca, RDP, were all good long range shooters too, just the whole thing is a misconception, who constantly shoots from bad scoring opportunities is a bad player/team.
If you think Messi carried Argentina to this year WC final that means either you are wrong or this team was indeed botched precisely because of the Messi dependence. Paredes (he just tries but constantly missing), Macca, RDP are definitely not good long range shooters in NT. If Messi was the only one the more we need this now. You can find teams winning most important games (Portugal 2004) with limited ideas of doing it otherwise. That being said I nowhere suppose taking player of good of-box-torpedo at the cost of leaving any all but this trait complete footballer. Enzo is versatile (long range, header goals, some driblings), young and in my eyes still eager. I see him still on 25 list.

Absolutely nothing came out of Argentina’s midfield and Enzo, no creativity, no ball possessions, that is the reason why Alvarez and Lautaro had a bad WC. Only when Messi drifted wide they scored goals.

No need to idealize everything Messi does. Discern between creative touch assist and ordinary pass that turned out to be assist. On the first goal against England you have flash of something special from Enzo, not Messi. One moment before Enzo’s other attempt could give this kind of “hand over the ball” assist to Alvarez.

Spain 100% dominated the midfield cause our midfielders played shit, ARG had zero chance to score because they were unable to make simple passes, not even talking about progressive passes. Keeping possession? Zero chance. We have to accept if the opponent have much better midfielders from much better clubs and better performances weekly bases. Where are the argentine midfielders and players overall in the endgame of UCL? Usually nowhere. That show perfectly our place in world football after Messi. Back then, in the beginnings, Scaloni built team of champions out of players being mostly somwhere between local league, mediocree european clubs, in the middle of the road or barely experienced in European football. We’ve heard that before. Who was Macallister back then. Just a talented player on the road from Boca to Brighton. Enzo in 2022 River/Benfica player. De Paul – Udinese. And other being constant underperformers on laon – like Paredes or Lo Celso. No you have Enzo, Barco – both Chelsea, Paz – rising star of Serie A, Prestianni (Benfica great stepping stone for many of Argentines), Aranda in similar situation like MacAllister in 2019. Potentiall and big european clubs experience of these midfielders is nowhere inferior. The big clubs interest came often after first triumphs not the other way.

I’m just as disappointed as anyone about the World Cup final. But I don’t think that a huge overhaul in players is called for. And I don’t see how blaming anyone is helpful. Lautaro had a bad 2022 World Cup, but he was excellent in the 2024 Copa America and 2026 World Cup. Give Enzo a break. He’s going to keep playing well for Argentina.
We are on track to be 2028 Copa America champions again. A few older players won’t play anymore and newer players will get more playing time. The national team is in a really great place. Since 2021 we’ve been in every final. Won 3 and lost 1. Paz and Barco will get more playing time and we will be in contention again.
