Argentina national team coach Lionel Scaloni has been offered a two year deal with a possible two year extension.
Lionel Scaloni stated that he might leave as Argentina national team coach in December when his contract ends. According to Gastón Edul, the AFA have offered Scaloni a contract until 2028 with a possibility for it to renew until 2030 for the World Cup.
Scaloni has not given a definitive answer but there is optomism from the AFA because his representatives are negotiating.
I am glad he might be staying. He deserves our trust, despite some of the challenges he had to navigate this past world cup. Is he prefect? No, but he is one the best things that happened to us.
Also, I don’t know if people saw it, but some of the names that were rumored to replace him were so mediocre or outright pathetic, that it hurt my brain and my heart to even imagine them taking over the national team. Not sure if there was any substance to those rumors, but still. It could have looked like Bauza and Sampaoli days all over again. So if for no other reason than to avoid a nightmare, it is a good thing Scaloni might continue.
Bro, another exciting generation on the horizon, so I am sure Scaloni and co will take the challenge to manage Argentina without Messi and possibly, or most likely, without the likes of De Paul, Paredes, and Lo Celso.
Yes, yes! Nico Paz, Prestianni, Barco and Equi I am most optimistic about. Let’s see about Soule and Mastantuono, Giay and other new names.
Some of the core players are still young, some in their prime and just about the tail end of their prime. Enzo is on fire for City, Mac is getting better lately, Lautaro is still lethal, Cuti played well vs Real the other day, etc, etc
I wondered why Perrone was not called but Equi call up answered that question, he has more to his game than Perrone.
De Paul and Lo Celso need to be phased out, the former is no longer the same, he only played well vs Algeria and and as a sub vs England. Lo Celso I always loved but his injury record speaks for itself. Paredes has such a long ban, maybe this would move it on for him organically.
Even though I was super critical of Scaloni’s player selection for the World Cup, including some of his starting XI choices, I’ll give him this, he had invested a lot in those players, including Almada, which is probably why he felt he had to stick with them instead of utilizing players like Nico Paz, Buendea, etc.
That being said, argentina were pretty lucky to make it all the way to the final. Luck was definitely on our side with the draw because we didn’t really face a top team until the semis. And even in the semifinal, if Tuchel had shown a little more guts, I honestly think england could have beaten us by two or more goals. Instead, he went super defensive and basically forced his team into a firing squad. Decisions like taking Kane off meant we barely had to defend at all.
Unfortunately, Scaloni didn’t learn anything from what happened to tuchel and england. His luck finally ran out in the final, and we lost. He also made almost the exact same mistakes Tuchel made in the semifinal. His approach was ultra-defensive.
Throughout the tournament, we constantly had to come from behind, and a lot of those comebacks happened only after the opposition started parking the bus and trying to protect their lead. Our midfield also got outplayed way too often, in almost every match.
Yes, Spain were beatable. They were no 2014 Germany, 1998 France, 1994 or 2002 Brazil, or 2022 Argentina. But at the end of the day, they were the better team.
Having said all of that, Scaloni took Argentina to back-to-back World Cup finals, and we can’t forget what he built in 2022. That team was incredible. No team in that tournament played more beautiful football than Argentina. Outside of the Saudi Arabia game, we outplayed every opponent we faced.
Now that the pain of losing the final to a better team is slowly wearing off and my brain is starting to work again, I actually want Scaloni to stay through 2030.He has a ridiculous amount of young talent to work with, and several of his core players are still young enough to be around for the next worldcup.So yeah, after all my criticism, I’m saying it, Scaloni should stay.
I respectfully disagree with your perspective; I believe Scaloni has been a tremendous asset to the Argentina national team, and England would not have been able to defeat them because Messi and the team performed at their absolute best, which ultimately secured their victory. ReserveSoccer Fields
