Nico Paz: “My dream is to play in the World Cup next year”

Argentina midfielder Nicolás Paz has made no secret of his biggest dream for the near future. Speaking with Cadena SER, the 20-year-old Como playmaker revealed:

“Right now, my dream is to play in the World Cup next year. I’m working every day to achieve it.”

Paz, who was named the Best Under-23 Player in Serie A last season after an impressive campaign with Como, said he feels fully supported by the Argentina national team staff.

“I made a good decision in playing for Argentina and I’m very happy. With the national team, they encourage me, take care of me, give me good advice and all their support. I’m very happy to be part of it. It’s a great source of pride.”

The left-footed midfielder made his Albiceleste debut on October 16 in a 6-0 World Cup Qualifier win against Bolivia and has already featured three times under Lionel Scaloni.

A lifelong fan of Lionel Messi, Paz explained how his admiration began:

“He’s been my idol forever. It was largely because of the influence of my family, who are Argentine. That’s why from a very young age I followed the national team closely. Even as a kid, I watched every game.”

While speculation continues over his club future, Paz stressed that his focus remains on Como, where he is under contract until June 2028.

“People will always talk a lot, but I’m calm and focused on Como. We have a very important season ahead, and we can achieve great things. I can’t wait for the first league match to show the world what we are capable of. I’m very excited.”

The midfielder also reflected on his time at Real Madrid, where he came through the youth ranks:

“I owe everything to Real Madrid. Whether I’ll go back is unknown. I’m focused on Como. I have no idea about the future — I don’t even know what I’m doing tomorrow.”

Last season, Paz scored six goals and provided nine assists in 35 Serie A appearances as Como, coached by Cesc Fàbregas, finished 10th in the table. His performances even earned praise from Italian legend Francesco Totti, who said:

“He will return to Real Madrid and will be one of the best in the world.”
