The latest FIFA rankings were updated on Wednesday, and Argentina continues to hold the top spot. It’s now been a year and a half since the Albiceleste took the lead in the standings.

The national team previously held the No. 1 ranking for 11 months between April 2016 and March 2017, during the cycles of Gerardo Martino and Edgardo Bauza. To catch up with Brazil’s record, which held the top position between 1994 and 2001, Argentina will need to maintain its lead.

Álvarez had the only goal of the match for Atletico Madrid in their loss. With the score at 0-0, the Argentine intercepted a back pass and scored to give Atletico the 1-0 lead.

Diego Simeone’s team would go on to let in three goals in the loss. Nahuel Molina and Rodrigo De Paul also started with Ángel Correa and Giuliano Simeone being substituted into the match.

River Plate lost 3-0 to Atlético Mineiro in Brazil in the first leg of the Copa Libertadores semifinals. It was a tough defeat for Marcelo Gallardo’s team as they will now have to overcome a three-goal deficit next week at El Monumental.

Germán Pezzella and Franco Armani started the game, while Marcos Acuña was ruled out just minutes before kickoff due to an injury. Manuel Lanzini, Maximiliano Meza, and Pablo Solari came on for the “millonarios” in the second half, but Claudio Echeverri and Franco Mastantuono remained on the bench throughout the game.

In Atlético Mineiro, coached by former Argentine defender Gabriel Milito, the Argentines Rodrigo Battaglia and Fausto Vera played the full 90 minutes.

The Champions League continues on Wednesday with nine matches and of those nine, there can be up to 17 Argentine players in the teams.

Atletico Madrid have the most Argentine players out of any team with six players and Diego Simeone as coach. Juan Musso, Rodrigo De Paul, Ángel Correa, Nahuel Molina, Julián Álvarez and Giuliano Simeone will play Lille in Madrid.

Reigning German champions Leverkusen with Exequiel Palacios will travel and play Brest while Alexis Mac Allister and Liverpool travel to play against RB Leipzig.
