As we reported last week, Mundo Albiceleste had gotten the squad numbers for the Olympics.

Today, the AFA confirmed the numbers. The big news is that Manuel LANZINI, despite being out of the tournament due to injury, is still included and has the number 7 shirt. I remains to be seen if PAVON (should he get called as a replacement to LANZINI’s injury), who previously had number 19, will receive LANZINI’s number 7 shirt or take the number 19 as his own.

Manuel LANZINI out of Rio, PAVON in

A blow for Argentina as Manuel LANZINI will not be going to Rio.

Julio OLARTICOECHEA will not be able to count on Manuel LANZINI for Rio as he’s been ruled out due to a knee injury which he sustained in the friendly match against Colombia. West Ham’s physio Stijn VANDENBROUCKE also commented on LANZINI’s injury. Here’s what he had to say:
“We are in contact with Manuel and the Argentine Football Association. We want him to return and be evaluated by our staff as soon as possible.”

While not confirmed yet, there are reports that Cristian PAVON of Boca Juniors will replace him.

According to Juan Pablo VARSKY, there’s a high chance that Jorge SAMPAOLI will coach the Argentina National Team.

There’s a 95% chance that SAMPAOLI will coach Argentina on a part time basis, according to VARSKY. At first, it would be part time and once the AFA is able to pay out his entire clause, he would fully take over.

Julio OLARTICOECHEA, Giovanni SIMEONE on Argentina win

Julio OLARTICOECHEA and Giovanni SIMEONE both commented on Argentina’s 3-1 win.

OLARTICOECHEA commented on the win and Manuel LANZINI’s injury. Goalscorer Giovanni SIMEONE spoke about the match, the Olympics and his father. Here’s what they had to say:

Julio OLARTICOECHEA:
“We knew it wasn’t going to be an easy match, because all the countries have grown on a physical level just as much as on the tactical level. At times, I liked what I saw, we always try to go out there and play and create chances.”

OLARTICOECHEA on Manuel LANZINI’s injury:
“The medical staff are evaluating him. We’re waiting to see the time length of it but they’ll have the last word about it.”

Giovanni SIMEONE:
“I’m happy for the team and for the goal. I think we had a good game, we were looking for open spaces they’d leave us.”

“I’m excited about the Olympics because it’s the sky blue and white, also, it’s an important tournament for any athlete. My father scored a goal at the Olympics. Let’s see if I can do the same.”
