Argentina lose opening match at Olympics

Argentina lose their opening match at the Olympics 2-0 against Portugal.

Argentina’s record of 12 consecutive wins at the Olympic games have come to an end. Prior to this 2-0 defeat to Portugal, Argentina’s last loss at the Olympics came in the 1996 gold medal game against Nigeria where they lost 3-2. After that, the team won all 6 of their matches in 2004 and their 6 matches in 2008.

Julio OLARTICOECHEA’s players had several opportunities (including Jonathan CALLERI hitting the crossbar) but were just un-able to find the back of the net. Geronimo RULLI, who pulled off some fantastic saves, was responsible for Portugal’s second goal as it was an absolute blunder.

Giovanni SIMEONE had a chance to pull one back for Argentina in the 90th minute but his close range bicycle kick effort was saved on the line.

Argentina are last place in the group and will play Algeria on Sunday.

Edgardo BAUZA to be officially presented

Tomorrow will be the official presentation of Edgardo Bauza as the new coach of the Argentina national team.

There will be a press conference at 4:00pm local time in Ezeiza at the AFA facilities. His first duty will be to seek out Lionel Messi and to basically have a football chat with him.  He insists that he will not try to convince him of anything as there is nothing for him to convince him on.

 

Federico FAZIO goes on loan to AS Roma

The Italian club have completed the loan deal of Federico FAZIO.

The defender arrives on a season-long loan deal but Roma have to buy him after the loan. The Olympic gold medalist spent last season on loan at Sevilla from his parent club Tottenham where he only took part in four league matches.

Now 29 years old, FAZIO joins fellow Argentinians Leandro PAREDES, Diego PEROTTI (also a former Sevilla alumni) and Ezequiel PONCE at his new club.

Gabriel MERCADO joins Spanish club Sevilla

La Liga club Sevilla have signed Argentina National Team defender Gabriel MERCADO from River Plate for €2.3 million.

MERCADO landed in Spain early on Thursday to finalize and sign his contract with the club. He joins an ever growing list of Argentinians at the club under Jorge SAMPAOLI. Along with MERCADO, there’s Matias KRANEVITTER, Luciano VIETTO, Joaquin CORREA and Nicolas PAREJA.

Now 29, MERCADO has gotten a big run of matches with the Argentina National Team at the right back position. In his 10 matches, he has scored two goals and in the process became Argentina’s top goal scorer in the team’s 2018 World Cup Qualifying campaign.
