Argentina U23 team named for the pre-Olympics, no European based players

Argentina U23 national team coach Javier Mascherano has named his team for the pre-Olympics this month and there are no European based players.

Javier Mascherano has named his team of 23 players for the tournament which starts on January 20 in Venezuela. Mascherano will not be able to count on players based in Europe since they were not released by their clubs.

World Cup winner Thiago Almada has been called up and will wear the number 10 shirt. Valentin Barco who is set to sign with Brighton is also called up while Federico Redondo also makes it.

Mascherano’s team are in Group B with Uruguay, Chile, Paraguay and Peru. Argentina will play Paraguay first on Januay 21 and will play their second match on January 24 against Peru.

January 27 has two matches in the group but Argentina will not be playing. They will play on January 30 against Chile and their last match will be on February 2 against Uruguay. Here are the players Javier Mascherano has called up to the team:

FIFA sanctions Argentina for “misconduct” and “discrimination” in Qualifying matches

FIFA sanctioned the Argentina Football Association this Wednesday for “misconduct,” “discrimination,” and “order and security” in their World Cup Qualifying games vs. Ecuador, Uruguay, and Brazil. As a result, Argentina will have 50% of the stadium’s capacity at their next home game, and they will have to pay a total of CHF 120,000 (Swiss Franc).

In the matches at home vs. Ecuador and Uruguay, Argentina had the following incidents according to FIFA:

Team misconduct (delayed kick-off), discrimination (discriminatory behavior by supporters), and order and security at matches (invasion of the field of play).

In the away game vs. Brazil, Argentina was sanctioned for “order and security at the match (lack of order or discipline in or around the stadium).”

On the other hand, Brazil received a CHF 50,000 fine for the game vs. Argentina due to “failure to ensure that law and order were maintained in and around the stadium and lack of order or discipline in the stadium.”

Claudio Echeverri will play in the Olympic qualifiers in place of injured Pedro de la Vega.

“El Diablito” was called up by the coach Javier Mascherano as an emergency following a muscle tear suffered by the Lanús attacker, Pedro de la Vega. Echeverri, who had already started the preseason with River Plate in the United States, will travel shortly to join the Argentina U-23 team.

The official list of players that will represent Argentina in the Olympic qualifiers to start on January 20 is expected to be released in the next couple of days.

Valentín Barco to join Brighton and will play in Olympic qualifiers

Valentín Barco will join Brighton and he will be playing in the Olympic qualifiers.

Barco is set to join Brighton and will be with the Argentina Olympic national team this month. According to Ezequiel Sosa, Brighton will allow Barco to play in the Olympic qualifiers with Javier Mascherano’s team.

The 19 year old is expected to join Brighton on a $10 million deal.
