Argentina lost 2-0 vs. Uruguay in the World Cup qualifiers.

Lionel Scaloni’s team lost their first match since losing 2-1 against Saudi Arabia at the World Cup. Argentina had one opportunity in the first half off a free kick with Uruguay getting the better chances.

Uruguay created more goal scoring opportunities and would score before the end of the first half. Nahuel Molina lost the ball on the right side and it was the Uruguayan Ronald Araujo who scored to give Uruguay the 1-0 lead.

It was the first goal Emiliano Martínez let in after 752 minutes, the first goal since the World Cup final. Scaloni would make a substitution at half time, bringing in Lautaro Martínez for Alexis Mac Allister.

Ángel Di María started the match on the bench but was substituted in for Nicolás González. Di María saw much of the ball when he was substituted in and was fouled on the edge of the penalty area.

Messi took the free kick and hit the crossbar. Scaloni made three more substitutions with Exequiel Palacios being substituted in for Rodrigo De Paul, Gio Lo Celso for Julián Álvarez and Marcos Acuña for Nicolás Tagliafico.

With Argentina seeing more of the ball and attacking, Uruguay had one counter attack as the ball fell to Darwin Núñez and he scored.

The World champions remain first in the South American World Cup qualifiers as they play Brazil on Tuesday.

  1. This loss was needed, and it was incoming better it came sooner hope it opens scaloni eyes and dont repeated the things what spain did in 2014 and germany 2018 extending old guards and incapable players too long. Otamendi, Armani, Pezella, Dimaria should be replaced eventually. Valantin barco should be integrated slowly as long as Acuna is there. Players likes Vallera and Redendo should be introduced to make midfield more competitive. Scaloni has done good job by calling up Pablo maffeo. Wingers should be tried we badly need recruitment in that department . Nico has been given enough chance since last 5 years but he does not have quality to play for argentina NT .

    • The only important replacement is Otamendi. The others barely every play. Pezella only when we need someone to win headers. Di Maria has accepted his role as a spark.

Valentin Barco and Garnacho could be called up and tried on the left wing.

The big problem here was lack of intensity and concentration and I suppose tactics. Our passing was uncharacteristically sloppy, so few crisp passes, and everyone had terrible touches. I blame it on the election and the Bombonera.

In hindsight we should have had another physical player in midfield, probably Paredes.

  2. Uruguay looked hyper motivated and hungry, that’s always a bad sign when playing against an opponent like that especially when they are energetic enough to execute a Bielsa plan…

The old man outwitted his disciples and former players today…

    • Yes, but Uruguay always is. One of Scaloni’s team most impressive performance was the 3-0 against Uruguay in 2021 after the Copa America. Other than the stinkers by MacAllister, Enzo, and Otamendi, we probably should have gone with 4 in midfield. So Scaloni got beat tactically something that hasn’t happened in a long time.

      • Uruguay hasnt beat Argentina in a decade. Their last victory was in 2013 , last qualifier game in which Sabella fielded a second strings since we’ve qualified with few games to spare.

I think they eventually gonna get one. Their victory against Brazil was their first in 2 decades.

        • This is a completely new and stronger Uruguay team with full of competent young players and with master tactician as their coach, they have a great shot at Copa 2024. Scaloni had Pezella as his only backup CB on the bench. This loss is a blessing in disguise. Our all three midfielders are going through an average run of form for their clubs and with such average performance from them struggling to string together 3 passes and Messi marked doubled teamed , we couldn’t create nothing. Other than Dimaria’s wide shot we had zero shot on goal from open play let alone shot on target. Otamendi was badly exposed by Uruguay who did Scaloni a huge favor. He will finally rethink about new starting CB. Today we looked like Manchester United under Ten Hag. LOL

          • Well, true they outplayed us today.

However, can you name one major silverware at senior level in last 2 decades by the master of tactician? Scaloni & even Dunga has been more successful than him at major tournament.

Remember Bielsa’s team suppose to win the WC 2002 by wide margin, based on qualifier result.

Scaloni’s team ended 2022 qualifier with lackluster draw againts Ecuador & started the WC with a lost againts Saudi, but his team won every games that really matter.

  3. First lose since the WC. A much needed smack in the face so Scaloni can finally introduce new players. Soule and Palacios should earn a start. We’re getting waaay to predictable with the starting line up, even the subs. Opponents will eventually thwart your gameplan. Barco should replace Otamendi.

        • Well answered. Soule is on form and equally deserve to be introduced to the team. Infact Bielsa started Pellistri who rarely starts for United, the boy has 0 goals in the league. Two days ago we raised the alarm on Scaloni list, and people called us all sort of names for questioning Scaloni’s decision to stick with some of the players. I was unhappy with likes of Pezella, Armani and Ocampos selected.
But today it was even more, I have been on record talking about aging players and need of replacing them at one point. Secondly I was concerned about players in bad form at their club level which might affect their performances at National level.
Form at club level is very important and might help players translate it at NT. Enzo Fernandez and McAlister have been awful at club level.

          • Who do you think Soule should have started for?

Enzo and MacAllister have been playing well in every match for Argentina for the past year. MacAllister especially and he hasn’t been awful at club level at all.

Soule might have come on rather than Lo Celso (who didn’t even play poorly). That’s all you can say.
