Simeone was in the starting line-up for the first time in the Champions League for Napoli and scored the first goal of the match. With the score at 0-0, a cross into the penalty area found Di Lorenzo who played it across to Simeone and he scored from close range to give Napoli the 1-0 lead.
Real Madrid took a 2-1 lead and Simeone was substituted out at half time for Victor Osimhen.
