Lionel Messi assists twice for Inter Miami in 2-2 draw vs. New York City

Lionel Messi had two assists for Inter Miami in their 2-2 draw against New York City.

Messi had both assists, one early in the match and one late in injury time for Inter Miami. The 37 year old received a pass inside the penalty area and he would play it across the penalty area to Tomás Avilés who would score from close range to give Inter Miami the 1-0 lead.

Tomás Avilés would get himself red carded. The defender would slide in for a tackle and win the ball but the referee would give him a red card and Inter Miami were short a player.

New York City would take the lead off an indirect free kick before the end of the first half and poor defending from Inter Miami would lead to New York City scoring a second goal and taking a 2-1 lead.

The Argentine would once more make the difference. A through ball in to Telasco Segovia 10 minutes into injury time and Segovia would chip the goalkeeper to draw Inter Miami level.

  1. That run he made for the second assist does seem like it came from a 37 years old. Yes, his goal scoring hasn’t been the same ever since his move to PSG but his ability to create chances is only improving. Once again we will rely in a 38 year old Messi in 2026 world cup.

  2. Once again goat is carrying whole team.
From last 3 years defensive mistake cost Inter Miami. They should have signed Sergio Ramos.
However despite playing with 10 man for most of the match still control the game and should have won the match.
Not signing a good defender could cost Inter Miami dearly.
