Nicolás González scores on debut for Atlético Madrid in 2-0 win vs. Villarreal

Atlético Madrid claimed their first victory of the 2025/26 La Liga season with a 2-0 home win over Villarreal, highlighted by strong performances from the Argentine players under Diego Simeone.

Nicolás González made his official debut for Atlético as a starter and marked the occasion with a goal early in the second half. The 27-year-old forward, who arrived from Juventus, connected with a Marco Llorente cross to head in his first goal for the club at the 52nd minute. González had to leave the pitch in the 76th minute after suffering a cramp, receiving an ovation from the home supporters.

Earlier, Atlético had taken the lead in the 9th minute through Pablo Barrios. The goal came after Giuliano Simeone forced an error and Julián Álvarez provided the assist. Álvarez, also fresh off international duty, was substituted at halftime for precautionary reasons.

Villarreal, with Juan Foyth starting in defense, threatened several times in the first half.

Dataref reported that González had a standout debut, recording the most duels won in the match (6), completing two successful dribbles, and delivering 14 out of 17 accurate passes.

Atlético had opened the season with two draws and one defeat, but the win moves them up the table to 7 points. Their next challenge will be the UEFA Champions League opener against Liverpool at Anfield on Wednesday, September 17.
