The Argentina national team won the first King Fahd Cup on October 20, 1992 against hosts Saudi Arabia. Argentina qualified for the tournament having won the 1991 Copa America.
Argentina, Ivory Coast, the United States and Saudi Arabia were the four teams which would take part in the tournament that would go on to become the Confederations Cup. On October 16, Argentina won 4-0 against Ivory Coast with Gabriel Batistuta scoring, Ricardo Altamirano scoring twice and Alberto Costa also scoring.

In the final, Argentina would win 3-1 with Leonardo Rodríguez, Claudio Caniggia and Diego Simeone scoring the three goals for the Argentina national team.
