José Manuel Lopez scores twice for Palmeiras in 3-1 win vs. River

River Plate’s run in the 2025 Copa Libertadores ended in São Paulo after a 3-1 defeat against Palmeiras in the second leg of the quarterfinals at Allianz Parque.

Having lost 2-1 at home in the first leg, River needed a comeback to reach the semifinals. The Argentine side struck first when Maxi Salas scored early, reviving hopes of a comeback.

Palmeiras equalized through Vitor Roque in the second half before José Manuel López, known as “El Flaco,” decided the tie with two goals. López converted a penalty following Marcos Acuña’s red card and added another in stoppage time to seal the 3-1 result.

Palmeiras now advances to face the winner between Liga de Quito and São Paulo in the semifinals.
