Scaloni has won seven World Cup matches, tying Cesar Menotti, who also has seven World Cup matches won. The two are behind Carlos Bilardo who has won eight World Cup matches, the most by an Argentina national team coach.
Carlos Bilardo won his eight matches having coached the team when they won the 1986 World Cup and the 1990 World Cup where the team reached the final. Lionel Scaloni won against Mexico, Poland, Australia and Croatia at the 2022 World Cup as the penalty shootout wins against the Netherlands and France count as draws.
At the 2026 World Cup, Scaloni has won against Algeria, Austria and Jordan. Cesar Menotti coached the team when they won the 1978 World Cup and at the 1982 World Cup.
Colombia was definitely a better team than Portugal, but I would have still preferred Portugal on the other half of the KO matches bracket. Argentina got a decent bracket. There are 2 big teams in our half of the bracket – England and Brazil. If they somehow get eliminated before SF, Argentina’s path to finals will likely be even smoother. But in any case, we fear no team.
I am surprised no one here praised Almada. In terms of taking on players and running with the ball to create plays, he was by far the best on the field today. Simeone and Paz also did very good in that regard. Lo Celso was also lovely to watch, and that free kick was just brilliant. Barco was just a bundle of energy and just brilliant. I loved every minute of Barco.
Anyways, the 2 things I wanted most from this game was for Argentina to keep their winning streak, and Messi to keep his scoring streak. I am happy that we got them.
Oh, Scaloni and all team members(including Aimar) are doing a very good job, but I think we might still improve in a few areas. In particular, I have seen that most Argentina players rarely predict and chase the ball to intercept a pass or preventing an opponent throw. On this department Jordan was much better.
Agree with the observations. However, there is also another pattern. We are not being to create many in-box scoring chances. Whether it be Messi, Semione or Nico Paz, all passes got intercepted before they could create any panic with the Jordan defence. But the bench strength seems to be ready. Barco – a joy to watch for his chasing the opponent players and accelerating at the right point.
Thiago Almada was excellent today. Another player impressed me was valentin barco. Julian Alvarez out of form. Lo celso good match. Parades error prone. Marcos Senesi good match.
