Emiliano Martínez on Argentina national team, the two World Cups

Emiliano Martínez spoke about the Argentina national team and the two World Cups.

Martínez commented at a press conference about the match against England, the World Cup final and people’s comments about Argentina’s opponents. At the same press conference, he spoke about the Argentina national team. Here is what he had to say:

“I just focus on winning, nothing else.

“This achievement belongs to the whole team, it’s hard to put into words what we have managed to do.

“First, we have to win, I only focus on that. Sometimes I cry just thinking about it. We have to savour the moment. My message to my team mates is to enjoy it and prepare with a sense of joy, these are moments we will remember for the rest of our lives.

“The goalkeeper is more than just making saves and nothing else. Staying calm, the posture in goal, these are things in football that influence my team mates. The guys are so good at playing football that I must convey security and tranquility to them.

“It’s nice to see so many kids wanting to be goalkeepers.

“I was always just another fan of the national team. It was always in my head to be the goalkeeper of the senior Argentina national team because I would come train at the AFA headquarters since I was 15 years old. For me, it’s a life in the national team.

“We feel identified with the people, with how we manage the pitch, with how to feel. We come from working families and we have a big union in the group. I would like them to remember us like this, like any Argentine, hardworking.

“For me, it’s important that my team mates and the coach trust in me. For me, that has more merit than saving 10 penalty kicks and being on the cover of newspapers.”

He also spoke about this World Cup and the one in Qatar:

“I am enjoying this World Cup, much more than the previous one. My decision making is better, I am better with my feet. I am eternally grateful to the Argentine people and my team mates. On Sunday, I’ll step onto the pitch with a smile.”

“I am confident in goal, I am the same Dibu that played in the garden in Mar del Plata.

His injury:

“My hand still hurts, every day. I knew that but I put off the surgery.

“All the specialists to me I needed surgery. It bothers me because I love training but since the Round of 16, I have been training as normal and I feel so much better.”
