Lionel Scaloni admits he was close to leaving the national team after their win over Brazil

0

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni spoke with host Alejandro Fantino for Neura Media, admitting he was close to leaving the national team after their win over Brazil in the World Cup Qualifiers.

Here’s what Scaloni said about his unexpected comments at the November 2023 press conference following Argentina’s 1-0 victory over Brazil at the Maracanã Stadium:

“Last year, after the match against Brazil at the Maracanã, I wasn’t feeling right with myself; I wasn’t comfortable. Certain fears came to mind that I hadn’t had before.

“I didn’t talk to anyone about it. I kept it to myself and felt I needed to reflect because I wasn’t at 100%, wasn’t comfortable. I needed to take a step back and reflect. Everything that had happened weighed on me, and maybe that’s when I started to process it all.

“What I went through may have created some anxiety. I talk a lot with my coaching staff and my wife. When you stop to think, we’ve already achieved something unimaginable in terms of titles, and then you wonder, ‘What’s next?’ We always want more, people always want more. But what would be more than this?

“I was close to leaving because I wasn’t in a good place. There’s no point being somewhere if you’re not yourself. The people I work with need me to be honest. I spoke up, said what I felt, and they told me to take some time. With time, I realized that everyone would support and help me, so we decided to continue. I renewed the energy I’d supposedly lost.”

Leandro Paredes set to join Boca Juniors in 2025

13

According to reports from journalist Gastón Edul, Leandro Paredes is keen on returning to Boca Juniors to secure more playing time.

Although the Argentine midfielder is under contract with AS Roma until June 2025, he may be available for a reduced fee in January, which would fit within Boca’s budget.

However, if Roma’s management decides to replace their coach and Paredes finds himself with increased playing opportunities, this could influence his decision to stay in Italy. If all goes as expected, he could be a valuable addition for the “Xeneizes” as they prepare for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.

The 30-year-old World Cup champion began his career at Boca from 2010 to 2014, where he played alongside his idol, and now club president, Juan Román Riquelme. Paredes is a devoted Boca fan and has always expressed his desire to return to the club while still at the peak of his career.

Mauro Icardi suffers ACL and meniscus tear, to undergo surgery

Galatasaray has confirmed that Mauro Icardi suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and meniscus in his right knee during the Europa League match against Tottenham.

The injury occurred when Icardi pressed Tottenham’s goalkeeper Fraser Forster late in the game. Attempting to intercept the ball, Icardi made an awkward movement with his knee and fell to the ground in pain. Medics attended to him, but he was unable to continue and was replaced by Michy Batshuayi.

Icardi addressed the situation on social media, confirming the injury:

“After undergoing tests this morning, the worst news was confirmed: ACL and meniscus tear. I’ll be out for a few months, but I’ll tackle this with a smile, working hard to come back better. I wish my teammates and the entire Galatasaray family a season filled with success and achievements. Thank you to everyone who has reached out with concern and support during this time. Much love to all, I’ll be back soon.”

The 31-year-old Argentine will undergo surgery in the coming days and is expected to be in recovery for several months.

Six minutes later, with the “Blues” already up by two, the former River Plate man took a similar corner to the one for the first goal, this time finding Axel Disasi, who headed it in to make it 3-0.

In the 21st minute, Chelsea’s attackers pressed high to recover the ball, and Enzo made a simple pass to Joao Felix, leaving him in a one-on-one situation, and he finished to score Chelsea’s 4th goal.

Marcos Acuña injured, to be out 2-3 weeks

Marcos Acuña felt a sharp pain in the hamstring of his left leg during River Plate’s game against Instituto on Wednesday. This is the same area that had been bothering him recently, and tests have confirmed a muscle tear that will sideline him for two to three weeks.

The 33-year-old left-back was not selected by Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni in the squad of 26 for the upcoming double matchday next week. With Nicolás González out of the Argentina squad due to injury, Acuña emerged as a possible replacement.

However, due to his recent injury setback, it has been confirmed that the World Cup-winning defender will not be called up by Scaloni.
