Geronimo RULLI had six saves and Ramiro FUNES MORI had one big blunder as Real Sociedad picked up a 2-1 win against Villarreal.
Two names back in the Argentina squad after missing out on the FIFA World Cup, Geronimo RULLI and Ramiro FUNES MORI both started (as well as Santiago CASERES who had an assist) both started for their respective clubs. It was the yellow submarines who opened the scoring with a Santiago CASERES assist and Gerard MORENO beat RULLI with a low shot.
Real Sociedad equalized before half time with a terrible back pass from Ramiro FUNES MORI as the ball fell to Willian JOSE who beat the goalkeeper to draw Sociedad level. Juanmi scored Sociedad’s second and the match winner with a shot from outside the area.
Should RULLI maintain this level of performance, there’s no reason why he can’t become Argentina’s undisputed starting goalkeeper. As for FUNES MORI, it wasn’t his best match but he has shown in the past with the Argentina National Team that he can be up to the task when asked upon.
Newell’s Old Boys remain winless after two matches while rivals Rosario Central collect all three points against Talleres.
The first match of the weekend involved Rosario Central travelling to Cordoba to take on Talleres Cordoba. Despite having double total shots (13 for Talleres in comparison to 6 from Rosario), only two were on target for Cordoba and one from Rosario and that one ended up being the match winner by Fernando ZAMPEDRI.
Former Argentina coach Edgardo BAUZA’s team took the lead off a corner kick where ZAMPEDRI was the first to head the ball and beat the goalkeeper. Veteran and former Argentina international Pablo GUINAZU (now 39, turning 40 later this month) started for Talleres.
In Rosario, it was Newell’s hosting Independiente and it was a disaster of a start for the home team. Emmanuel GIGLIOTTI scored in the third minute to give his team the 1-0 lead with the assist coming from Maxi MEZA. Hector FERTOLI drew level for the home team but GIGLIOTTI with an open net goal in the 43rd minute right before half time after some bad defending by Newell’s.
Fabricio FONTANINI kicked off the second half with a goal of his own to make it 2-2 and the final result. Joel AMOROSO was sent off in the 68th minute for Newell’s.

Lionel MESSI scored an under the wall free kick goal in FC Barcelona’s 3-0 win against Alaves.
Another start to a La Liga campaign and another Lionel MESSI goal or in this case two. The winner of the European Golden Shoe for the last two seasons scored twice to get off the mark this season.
Barcelona were awarded a free kick and the club captain stepped up and hit the ball under the Alaves wall and went in to make it 1-0 for last season’s La Liga winners. Brazilian COUTINHO added a second before MESSI himself made it 3-0 to seal the win.
The free kick goal was Barcelona’s 6000th La Liga goal. On February 1, 2009, MESSI scored Barcelona’s 5000th goal in La Liga.
A cycle has finally come to an end and a new chapter is being written in regards to the Argentina National Team.
For the better part of a decade, when one thought about the Albiceleste, the first words which would come to mind would be Lionel MESSI. Whether that’s a good thing or not, that is slowly changing. The Argentina team has always been more than just Lionel MESSI. The same way it was more than just Gabriel BATISTUTA, Diego MARADONA or Mario KEMPES. However, all eyes were on the little number 10 and now, that is no longer the case.
This new chapter which is about to be written should have started after the 2014 FIFA World Cup final. While new players were introduced into the team (Roberto PEREYRA, Gabriel MERCADO and others), when it came to the subsequent two Copa’s America and the 2018 FIFA World Cup, the same core from four years earlier remained. Lionel MESSI, Sergio AGUERO, Javier MASCHERANO, Gonzalo HIGUAIN, Marcos ROJO, Lucas BIGLIA and even Enzo PEREZ. All that is changing.
Despite what many think, there is talent beyond that generation of players. And more than talent, there is leadership. German PEZZELLA and Mauro ICARDI are both captain’s for their clubs while Nicolas TAGLIAFICO wore the armband for Independiente when they lifted the 2017 Copa Sudamericana. Throw in an experienced Sergio ROMERO who has been an undisputed starter for close to 10 years with Argentina and there’s no lack of captain material.
Can Germán Pezzella find himself as one of Argentina’s captains?
In the goalkeeping department, Geronimo RULLI who has been touted as the future number 1 for some time has received another opportunity in the team. He did himself no favors by not having the best of seasons last time with Real Sociedad. This upcoming campaign will be a big one for the former Estudiantes shot stopper as he can permanently play himself into the Argentina squad. Franco ARMANI who eventually became the starting goalkeeper at the World Cup finds himself in the team and could become the third choice goalkeeper should ROMERO and RULLI be the first two choices.
In the back, we have three new faces. Walter KANNEMANN, Alan FRANCO and Leonel DI PLACIDO. KANNEMANN has been fantastic for club side Gremio and could become a pillar in the heart of the Argentina back line. After being left out of the World Cup squad, Fabricio BUSTOS finds himself back in contention for the right back position.
No Javier MASCHERANO, Lucas BIGLIA, Enzo PEREZ or Ever BANEGA in midfield. In come Matias VARGAS, Franco CERVI, Leandro PAREDES, Santiago ASCACIBAR, Rodrigo BATTAGLIA, Exequiel PALACIOS and Gonzalo MARTINEZ. In short, lots of new and exciting players. VARGAS has been playing very well for Velez and it will be very interesting to see how ASCACIBAR performs if given the chance.
With no Lionel MESSI in the squad, the creativity on the team will be shared. VARGAS, CERVI, PAREDES and LO CELSO just to name a few are all exciting young players who can find themselves being in the Argentina team for a few years.
Giovani Lo Celso didn’t play at the World Cup but can prove vital for Argentina moving forward.
The attack is arguably better than what Argentina took to the World Cup. Angel CORREA has improved under Diego SIMEONE, Cristian PAVON has World Cup experience under his belt and Gio SIMEONE can add a lot to the attack. You also have the Inter duo of Lautaro MARTINEZ and Mauro ICARDI who can both score goals for fun. Paulo DYBALA criminally barely got any minutes at the World Cup but can and hopefully will play a massive part for the next few years for Argentina. He can create, dribble, score and play in many positions.
There’s a solid base of players available for the coach (Lionel SCALONI or whoever gets selected to take over) to build off of moving forward. The road to the 2019 Copa America begins now and for the first time in years, every position in the team is up for grabs.
Argentina full back Leonel DI PLACIDO was absolutely shocked upon hearing that he has been selected for Argentina’s upcoming friendly matches against Guatemala and Colombia.
Interim Argentina coach Lionel SCALONI has selected many new faces and it was Lanus president Nicolas RUSSO who gave DI PLACIDO the call to tell him he will be included in the Argentina team. Here’s what the DI PLACIDO had to say:
“It shocked me, I wasn’t expecting it. I didn’t even know the list came out today. I was chosen and I have to take advantage of it. You can’t give up because anyone can be selected. Thankfully I have a visa, I have a foot forward.
“My good form made me reach Lanus (from Atletico Tucuman) but at first I didn’t participate much. Now, luckily, the coach has given me confidence and I feel much better.”
Leonel also spoke about the full backs in the Argentina league:
“I believe that little by little, they’ll appear. Fabricio BUSTOS, Leonardo GODOY and Renzo SARAVIA are all at a good level.”
