Nicolás González scores twice for Atlético Madrid in 3-2 win vs. Real Sociedad

Nicolás González returned from injury in excellent form, scoring two goals in Atlético Madrid’s 3-2 win over Real Sociedad at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano in La Liga. The Argentine forward had been out for three weeks with a muscle injury but made an immediate impact in his return to action.

González started the game on the bench and entered in the ninth minute of the second half. In less than a half of football on the field, he scored twice to lead Diego Simeone’s team to the win.

The Argentine forward scored his first goal of the night in the 22nd minute of the second half, putting Atlético ahead once again. Just fourteen minutes later, in the 36th minute of the half, he found the net again to secure the 3-2 victory for the home side.

With these two goals, the former Argentinos Juniors player now has three goals in 27 appearances for Atlético Madrid. His previous goal for the club came on September 13 in his debut match, when Atlético defeated Villarreal 2-0.

González’s return to scoring form is also positive news for the Argentina national team. With the FIFA World Cup only months away, Lionel Scaloni will be closely following the physical condition and performances of his players, and González remains one of the attacking options under consideration.

Atlético Madrid began the match with several Argentine players involved. Nahuel Molina, Thiago Almada and Giuliano Simeone started the game, while Juan Musso, Julián Álvarez and González were among the substitutes. Diego Simeone opted to rotate parts of the squad due to the team’s demanding schedule.

The victory strengthens Atlético Madrid’s position in third place in the La Liga standings, keeping the club in the Champions League qualification zone.

Joaquín Martínez: The Sevilla left-back with Argentine roots on Lionel Scaloni’s radar

A new name has started to appear in reports surrounding potential future players for the Argentina national team: Joaquín “Oso” Martínez. The 22-year-old defender, currently playing for Sevilla FC, has drawn attention in Spain and could become another dual-national player followed by Lionel Scaloni’s coaching staff.

Martínez was born in Torrevieja, Spain, but has strong family ties to Argentina. His father, Hernán Martínez, is originally from Reconquista, in the province of Santa Fe. That connection has allowed the young defender to obtain Argentine nationality, meaning he is eligible to represent either Argentina or Spain at the international level.

He recently made his debut as a starter in La Liga with Sevilla, a moment that quickly put him in the spotlight. His first appearance came at the Mestalla stadium against Valencia, where he started the match and played until the 85th minute.

Martínez plays mainly as a left back or wing-back but can also operate as a winger. His performances before a recent muscle injury against Girona had already shown his main strengths: strong physical presence, constant runs down the left side, and an ability to contribute in attack.

His displays have impressed the coaching staff at Sevilla, currently managed by former Argentina international Matías Almeyda. According to reports in Andalusian media, the player has been considered one of the club’s most promising discoveries this season.

The defender’s football path began in Spain. Martínez developed through the youth systems of Kelme CF, Real Murcia, and Málaga CF. His professional debut came in 2022 with Atlético Malagueño, where he played four matches and scored one goal.

In 2023, he moved to Sevilla Atlético, the club’s reserve team, where he made 65 appearances and scored three goals. During that period he played mostly as a left winger, but coaches later moved him deeper on the field to play as a wing-back or full-back.

That positional change helped him adapt to the tactical demands of the first team and eventually led to his opportunity in La Liga.

His rise has also attracted attention from the Argentina national team staff. Reports in Spain indicate that Lionel Scaloni and his assistants are monitoring Martínez’s development as they continue to evaluate young players eligible for the Albiceleste.

Ángel Di María questions Atlético Madrid’s treatment of Argentine players

Ángel Di María shared his thoughts on Atlético Madrid and coach Diego Simeone in a recent interview, raising questions about how Argentine players are managed at the Spanish club.

The former Argentina international spoke with Radio La Red after another strong performance for Rosario Central. Di María scored the opening goal in the Rosario derby against Newell’s at the Estadio Marcelo Bielsa, continuing his good form since returning to Argentine football.

During the interview, Di María was asked about the situation of Argentine players at Atlético Madrid. Without mentioning Simeone directly, he suggested that many players struggle to maintain a consistent role in the team.

“That club is a bit strange,” Di María said. “When things go well, they go well. But suddenly it feels like they turn off the players and they start to disappear. It has happened to many of the guys who were there. Only a few have a long run as starters and never come out of the team.”

Atlético Madrid currently has several Argentine players in the squad, including Juan Musso, Nahuel Molina, Thiago Almada, and Julián Álvarez. In recent weeks, there has also been speculation about Álvarez’s relationship with Simeone after some situations that suggested possible tension.

Despite his comments about the club, Di María highlighted the difference when Argentine players join the national team.

“The beautiful thing about the national team is that when these guys put on the Argentina shirt, they become different players,” he said. “They transform, they play incredible football and enjoy being there. That makes me very happy.”

Di María was also asked if he would consider returning to the Argentina national team if Lionel Scaloni called him again. The winger confirmed that he plans to respect the decision he made to step away from international football.

“I would always listen, but maybe they would invite me to drink mate and eat an asado,” Di María joked. “I made a decision and I want to respect it. There are many new young players and a great group now.”

He also praised Scaloni’s work with the national team, highlighting the coach’s efforts to renew the squad.

“I know the coaching staff always wants to bring in new players and have many options before making the final decision,” Di María explained. “The group is already on the right path, and with the World Cup getting closer, I understand what they are building.”

The 2022 World Cup winner also spoke about the difference between Argentine football and European football. According to Di María, the condition of many pitches in Argentina makes it harder to play a fast and technical style.

“Here it is very difficult to play when the field is dry,” he said. “Sometimes you need five touches just to move the ball three meters. In Europe you control the ball, pass it, and when the defender arrives the ball is already gone.”

Finally, Di María reflected on the most memorable finals of his career. He pointed to Real Madrid’s 2014 Champions League final against Atlético Madrid and Argentina’s 2022 World Cup final against France as two of the best matches he has played.

However, he added that winning the Copa Libertadores with Rosario Central could become the most special moment of all.

“If I win the Libertadores with Central, it could surpass everything,” Di María said. “Taking the club to a Libertadores final and becoming champion would be something unique for me and for the club.”
