Argentina national team coach Lionel Scaloni has stated that there was need to risk Messi.

Lionel Scaloni did not start Lionel Messi in Argentina’s 1-0 win vs. Ecuador. The Argentina national team coach spoke to the media after the win, discussing his reasoning not to start Messi. Here is what he had to say:

“There are times when there is no need to take risks, not only with Leo (Messi). Today, there are other players that didn’t play, like Otamendi. Di María had his minutes, Enzo came back after an operation.

“The idea is to take care of everyone a little and ensure that they arrive in optimal conditions. In some cases, like with Nahuel Molina, we didn’t want to risk it, because he is not 100% fit.”

Scaloni also spoke about the match. Here is what he had to say:

“I thought it was a good match on our part, and also on Ecuador’s part, very intense for being a friendly. We did what we had to do: try to dominate and handle the ball.”

Paredes was back in the starting eleven for Argentina in their 1-0 win vs. Ecuador and played alongside Rodrigo De Paul and Gio Lo Celso. The Argentine spoke to the media after the game. Here is what he had to say:

“I feel very good physically and football wise. Getting to the national team this team makes me very happy. I always prepare myself to be able to give more.”

Rodrigo De Paul spoke about the match vs. Ecuador and preparing for the 2024 Copa America.

De Paul started for Argentina in their 1-0 win vs. Ecuador on Sunday. The Argentine is an undisputed starter for the national team and is taking part in his third Copa America. Speaking to the media after the win, here is what he had to say about the match:

“It is always difficult to face Ecuador and I think we played a great game. We know the demands and how these matches are played. We have to understand that there are moments to play and others to be intense.”

Ángel Di María commented on Argentina’s 1-0 win vs. Ecuador.

Di María scored the only goal of the match for Argentina in their win. Speaking to the media after the match, here is what he had to say about his goal:

“I never thought that Cuti (Cristian Romero) was going to give it to me because the pass he made was terrific. It was a deserved win.”

In regards to the team and the Copa America:

“We have to continue working as always and stay as united as we are.

“Ecuador is an opponent that we can meet at the Copa America. We know that it is going to be more than a complicated tournament. Today was a good match to show how we are.

“The important thing is that we are well and with the hope of achieving more goals.”

Argentina will play Guatemala on Friday.

Ángel Di María scores for Argentina in 1-0 win vs. Ecuador

The first half saw Argentina have a lot of the ball but unable to create many chances. The first effort on goal came from Lisandro Martínez after 26 minutes but his effort was saved by the goalkeeper.

Ángel Di María scored the first goal of the match as he received the ball, played it to Rodrigo De Paul and continued his run into the penalty area. De Paul found Cristian Romero who held the ball and passed it onto Di María and he would score to give Argentina the 1-0 lead.

Di María nearly made it 2-0 just moments later off a free kick but his effort hit the crossbar.

Lionel Scaloni would start the second half with the same team but he would make a few changes in the second half. Lionel Messi replaced Ángel Di María and Enzo Fernández replaced Lautaro Martínez.

The team would create more chances with Rodrigo De Paul crossing to Lautaro but his unmarked header would fall straight to the goalkeeper. Scaloni would bring on Ángel Correa and Nicolás González who replaced Julián Álvarez and Leandro Paredes.

Lucas Martínez Quarta was brought on for Gonzalo Montiel and played as a left back and Exequiel Palacios was substituted in for Rodrigo De Paul.

Argentina would end up winning 1-0 ad will play Guatemala on Friday.
