Finalissima between Argentina and Spain cancelled

3

The Finalissima match between Argentina and Spain has been cancelled.

With the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and the Gulf, the initial match set to take place on March 27 in Qatar was in doubt. Talks between CONMEBOL and UEFA took place and UEFA released a statement, announcing that the match has been cancelled. Here is the statement:

“With strong determination to save the important fixture, and despite the understandable difficulties of relocating a match of such importance at extremely short notice, UEFA explored other feasible alternatives but each ultimately proved unacceptable to the Argentinian Football Association.

“The first option was to stage the match at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium in Madrid on the original date with a 50:50 split of supporters in the stadium. This would have provided a world class setting, befitting of such a prestigious event, but Argentina refused.

“The second was to stage the Finalissima over two legs – one at the Santiago Bernabeu on 27 March and the other in Buenos Aires during an international window before UEFA EURO and Copa America 2028, again offering a supporter split of 50:50 for the match in Madrid. This option was also rejected.

“Ultimately, UEFA sought a commitment from Argentina that, if a neutral venue in Europe could be found, the game could go ahead on 27 March, as planned and announced on 18 December 2025, or on the alternative date of 30 March. This proposal was also rejected.

“Argentina made a counter suggestion to play the game after the World Cup but, as Spain has no available dates, that option had to be ruled out.  Finally, and contrary to the original agreed plan that the match would take place on 27 March, Argentina declared its availability to play exclusively on 31 March, a date which proved to be unworkable.”

Joaquín Panichelli scores for Strasbourg in 2-1 win vs. Rijeka

Argentine forward Joaquín Panichelli continued his impressive season with Racing de Strasbourg, scoring in his team’s 2–1 victory over Croatian side Rijeka in the first leg of the UEFA Conference League round of 16.

The goal came almost immediately after kickoff. With just one minute played, Panichelli received a pass inside the box from Sebastian Nanasi. The 23-year-old controlled the ball with a precise first touch and finished with the outside of his foot toward the far post, beating goalkeeper Martin Zlomislic to give Strasbourg an early lead in the European tie.

Panichelli is enjoying one of the best seasons of his career. The striker, who came through River Plate’s youth academy, joined Strasbourg this season after a strong campaign with Mirandés in Spain. Since arriving in France, he has quickly established himself as one of the team’s key attacking players.

Across all competitions this season—Ligue 1, the UEFA Conference League, and the Coupe de France—Panichelli has played 36 matches, scoring 18 goals and providing four assists. His scoring form has also placed him among the top scorers in the French league, where he currently ranks second.

Another Argentine featured in the match as well, with Valentín Barco starting and playing the full 90 minutes for Strasbourg.

Panichelli’s performances have not gone unnoticed by the Argentina national team coaching staff. Head coach Lionel Scaloni recently called him up to the national team, and the striker made his debut in Argentina’s win against Angola.

With the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada approaching, the Panichelli is positioning himself as a potential attacking option for the Albiceleste. At the moment, he appears to have the edge over José López as one of the possible alternatives in Argentina’s forward line.
