Argentina lost 2-0 vs. Uruguay on Thursday and it was their first World Cup qualifying loss since 2017 and their first at home in over seven years.

Lionel Scaloni’s team lost for the first time since their 2-1 match against Saudi Arabia at the World Cup. Having gone undefeated throughout all of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers, Scaloni’s team have now lost for the first time in these qualifiers.

The last time Argentina had lost a World Cup qualifier was away against Bolivia in 2017 when Edgardo Bauza was still coach of the team. Lionel Messi had missed that match due a suspension he received against Chile for speaking out against the referees.

Argentina’s last World Cup qualifying loss at home came in October 2016 in a 1-0 defeat against Paraguay. It was a match where Lionel Messi did not play due to injury and it was Sergio Agüero who wore the number 10 shirt as he missed a penalty in that match.

Scaloni’s 2-0 loss against Uruguay was his first loss in a World Cup qualifying match.

Argentina national team coach Lionel Scaloni spoke about the team’s 2-0 loss vs. Uruguay.

Lionel Scaloni lost his first match as Argentina coach since the 2-1 defeat against Saudi Arabia at the World Cup. The coach gave an interview to TyC Sports after the match. Here is what he had to say:

“The truth is that it was a match where we were never comfortable. They deserved to win, no doubt. We never found our way, that is the truth. We tried to correct it in the second half with some changes but it seems that it was not our day. But I repeat, it is their merit for the way they played.

“I would have to think about it a lot or watch the match but in the short time that passed, I think they were better, that is the reality. We were not in the match and then will, I will be able to analyze, looking at the development but the opponent sometimes plays and we have to congratulate them. The truth is that they were better.”

Scaloni also spoke about the match against Brazil on Tuesday:

“A very difficult match is coming. We will try our best. I think this team has shown that it can get out of difficult situations. Here, we lose and win as a team, there is no other way. Sometimes you have to give credit to the opponent. We cannot think that just because we are world champions we will never lose.

“We are not unbeatable, I have said it and I will continue to say it. The player feels back up by the support of the people, I hope it will always be like that.”

Rodrigo De Paul commented on Argentina’s 2-0 loss against Uruguay and the match against Brazil on Tuesday.

De Paul started Argentina’s World Cup qualifying match against Uruguay and the Argentine was part of a scrap in the first half. Speaking to TyC Sports after the match, here is what he had to say:

“Unfortunately, we were not able to do what we have been doing. Uruguay did very well. Sometimes we have to lose. The important thing is what happens from now on.

“We lost because Uruguay outplayed us. The team has shown that it has a lot of character. This is football. I think that out of the last 50 matches, this is the second one we have lost. The pain is that we were not able to give the people a nice moment and a win. But I think the team can’t be criticized for anything.

“We, in the development of the match, should have found options and possibilities to counter what Uruguay came to do.”

The 29 year old was asked about the scrap on the pitch:

“It’s a stupid thing to do. It’s on the pitch, nothing happens. I like to talk about football. Uruguay did better and now we have to get up and play a great match in Brazil. Sometimes football is unfair. We have to take care of everything we have won, everything we have achieved, all the respect we have earned in this time. It is done on the pitch and nothing else.”

Argentina play Brazil on Tuesday and De Paul was asked about the match:

“It is an attractive match to come. Brazil and Argentina is alawys different. It is a classic, at the Maracana, which we have fond memories of the last time… It will be a very difficult match but we are ready for it.

“We will prepare for the match with the respect Brazil deserves for the great team that they are. It is not for nothing that they have never lost at home in the qualifiers. Going to the Maracana brings back nice memories but it will be different.”

Lionel Messi spoke about Argentina losing 2-0 vs. Uruguay in the World Cup qualifiers.

Messi and the Argentina national team remain first in the South American World Cup qualifiers with four wins and one loss. Messi spoke to the media about the intensity of the match against Uruguay. Here is what he had to say:

“It’s normal. It is part of these matches, qualifiers. Against Uruguay, it’s always like this. I prefer not to say what I think.

“The young people need to learn respect from the older ones. This clasico is always intense, hard but always with a lot of respect. They have to learn a little bit.

“We had a hard time playing. They are intense. They play one on one, they have physical and fast players in the middle. It was hard for us to find out game.

“We never felt comfortable. We never found a way to have the make and keep it for long possessions. Maybe their game makes us speed up and we get caught up in their rhythm. They are a physical team, that works well and that is very dangerous on the counter attack.

“You can see Bielsa’s hand in the team. They have a good team that plays well. We lost, this could happen. We have to get up and play a good game in Brazil.”
