In an interview with TyC Sports, Franco Mastantuono broke his silence after months of speculation surrounding his move from River Plate to Real Madrid. The 17-year-old, one of Argentina’s brightest young prospects, shared his thoughts on a life-changing transfer, his love for River, the challenges of leaving home, and his dreams for the future.

“Reaching Real Madrid is a dream,” Mastantuono said. “I always said my dream was to play in Europe, but of course I dreamed of the biggest—Real Madrid.”

He revealed that the Spanish club had first reached out over a year ago.

“At the start of the year, my only thought was playing for River. But then Madrid came back and showed me how much they wanted me. That changed everything.”

Mastantuono emphasized the emotional impact of leaving River Plate, where he developed as both a player and a person.

“For me, River is my life. I was formed there, not just as a player but as a person. I’ll always be grateful.”

He highlighted the special moments he experienced at the club—particularly his goal against Boca Juniors.

“That goal against Boca was very special. It was probably the most important match I played for River.”

Despite his excitement about the move, Mastantuono made it clear he’s aware of the weight of wearing the white shirt.

“I’m going from the biggest club in South America to the biggest in Europe, and probably the world. It’s a huge personal challenge.”

“Yes, I spoke to Xabi (Alonso). He was very honest and respectful, and that helped me make the decision.”

Now preparing for the next stage, Mastantuono admits the thought of playing alongside stars like Mbappé and Vinícius is surreal.

“Growing up in Argentina, Madrid feels so far away. But knowing that soon I’ll be there—it moves me.”

He’s already visualized standing on the field as the Champions League anthem plays:

“The Champions League is something I’ve dreamed about. It’s like the Libertadores here. I talked about it with teammates—it’s incredible.”

“I’m not thinking about the Ballon d’Or. I want to adapt, win titles, help the team. That’s what matters most.”

Despite being just 17, Mastantuono speaks with the maturity of someone far older—something he attributes to his early experiences.

“Living in a boarding house from a young age made me mature fast. I know I’m 17, but I don’t feel like it. I don’t think about age. I just try to face everything with responsibility.”

Mastantuono took time to thank the River fans for their support, even acknowledging those who were upset with his departure.

“I understand the fans who are angry. I’m a River fan too. But I felt supported throughout. When I debuted, they applauded me without even knowing who I was. That meant everything.”

To his new supporters in Spain, Mastantuono promised full dedication:

“At any club I’m at, I’ll give everything. At Madrid, I’ll be professional, committed, and do my best to help the team.”

“My dream is to stay at Real Madrid for many years. I don’t think about other clubs. I want to win everything here.”
