Argentina list of 23 for 2018 FIFA World Cup squad announced

1. With Biglia and Mascheranho Argentina is going to concede more many goal than expected. No doubt about that.
   Rodrigo Battaglia and Leandra Parades should play in WC instead if old and slow defensive midfielder. No one can challenge about the ability of both young players.
   Team like Portugal and Germany simply will ruin the defence of Argentina if Mascheranho and Biglia play in the WC matches.
   Don’t live in a dream.
   Be realistic.
   Remember of recent past.

2. [WC 2018: Squad Review]

   Looking at the team I can say it’s a good mixture of old and young players, 10 out of 23 players played less than 10 matches for us. Still somehow, I can see our attack is too heavy and few defensive players are sacrificed to increase the strength in the attacking line. Also looks like Sampoli going to take attacking approach in the World Cup and gave preference to versatility of the players, who are capable of playing in different positions. Whether this is correct decision, that time will tell.

   Goal Keeper: No Complain. Happy to see Armani in the team and won’t mind if he starts ahead of that forever-benchwarmer, Romero. Maybe Sampoli could have kept one young goal-keeper in pace of Willy.

   Forwards: Only Icardi ahead of Higuain would have made this forward line better else all our best 3 strikers are in the team. Happy to see Dybala in the team and hopefully Sampoli will work in Messi-Dybala combination in 3 weeks of time and most importantly hope KUN will be 100% fit before World Cup.

   Defense: Average and I am worried as Sampoli selected only kept 2 Center-backs. So if one of Otamendi or Fazio is injured or suspended, means Rojo going to take his place, which is really worrying. But there are not much options around, still Pezulla should have made this defense slightly better.

   – Otamendi: Lost his form at the end of the season, which really worries me. Also always tries too much and keep the defense unguarded. Our 1st choice but is he is reliable?
   – Fazio: Good in air. But overall slow, Passing and ball control is not that good and most importantly inconsistent, sometimes looks like a world beater and very next day very poor.
   – Rojo: Why he is the team? I will prefer Mascherano/Mercado as 3rd Center-back not Mr. Rojo. I am curious to know on what basis he is in the team? Based on his performance this season or based on Spain match performance? As Taglifico and Ansaldi in the team, I can’t see him as left-back options as well? Then why Rojo?
   – Mercado: Can play as Center-back also as right-back. Not world class unfortunately one of the automatic choice for us and can give us an option of 3rd CB.
   – Ansaldi: Finally, happy to see him in the team. Good backup for both the full-backs, even can be a starter.
   – Taglifico: Impressed in the 2 friendly matches he played but can he played Alba type of role for Messi? A lot will depend on that.
   – Acuna: Why to consider him as full-back despite playing as winger week after week and we already have 3 LB options? May be left-attacking midfielders in 3-4-3 formation.

   Overall, I am worried with this defense but other than Pezulla, who probably our most inform Center-back now, in place of Rojo, I cannot think about any other defender who actually can improve this defense. But hope that with this defense Sampoli won’t play high-defensive line of football, that might lead to a disasters for us.

   Midfield: Too many wide-attacking midfielders (or winger) in team. Salvio, Acuna, Lanzini, Pavan, Di Maria, Meza even Messi.

   Defensive Midfiders: Bigila and Mascherano. Bigila recovering from injury and Mascherano cannot play for 90 minutes, that makes me worried. Any one of Battaglia, Pizarro or Enzo Perez should have been there in the team. Hope Bigila will recover completely as he is our best probable man to cover the defense.

   Central Midfielder: Lo Celso (Good, promising but very young), Banega (can anyone name any inconsistent player than him? but still he is one of the creative midfielders we have around).

   Attacking midfielders: Lanzini and Meza and wide-attacking midfielders, it’s actually half of the team starting from Messi, Di maria, Pavan, Salvio, Acuna.

   Looking at the team selected by Sampoli, looks like Sampoli going to give importance to wing-play which is understandable as we don’t have many creative players who can play through the middle. 2 potential formations he is going to use 4-2-3-1 or 3-4-3. But again, thinking with so many wingers/wide-attacking players why Icardi is left out of the team?

   In 4-2-3-1 formation he will use wing-backs to start the attack from wing, so formation could be

   Marcado – Otamendi – Fazio – Ansaldi/Taglifico
   ——– Lo Celso ——-Bigila———
   Lanzini ———– Messi ————Di maria
   ——————-Kun ——————-

   else he will go for 3 men defense and will use Acuna and Salvio as wide attacking midfielder.

   Overall, it’s not a World Cup winning team but other than Icardi, Pezulla and Enzo all our best/better players are in the team. I am sure we will try to play attacking-attractive brand of football in the world Cup but beating top opponents like France, Spain or Germany with this team is difficult. Entire team need to be their best and a lot will depend on Messi, Kun, Di Maria, Bigila, Romero, defense and how all will support Messi.

   Positives for us are Messi is in better shape than 2014, many players who actually can support Messi and I feel that Sergio Aguero has some unfinished business for us and he will do well if regain full fitness. Let’s hope for the best.

4. I think Sampaolis default lineup will have 3 central defenders,with the ability to switch to a back four if necessary,these and their backups will be Sweeper-Otamendi,Fazio
   Left centeback- Rojo, Tagliafico
   Right centreback-Mercado,Ansaldi

   In his last season at Independiente Tagliafico played centre back and I’ve seen Ansaldi play in a back three at times in his last season at Genoa.

   This is the only explanation I can think of for having so few centrebacks in the squad.

5. If Fazio injured and Otamendi suspended (possible), we are left with Rojo, Mascherano, and Mercado to chose from for 2 CB pair…!!

6. Good list. My only concern is the lack of a backup for Biglia/Mascherano’s position. It’s understandable as Pizzaro has been in bad form and Battaglia/Ascacibar has never been tested. Probably, in the very very worst case, Sampaoli will play 3 central midfielders instead of a traditional No 5.
   And FFS, please give the so called “friends club” a rest. Players deserve respect and support. Period!

11. That’s quite good list but I’m afraid there are big mistakes in crucial positions – central positions.

    Lack of No.5 like Battaglia, Ascacibar or Pizarro (I have serious doubt we can handle defensively without such man). Here at least one of Biglia/Masche/Banega should have been out. They were so poor in last matches .

    So we have 3 potential losers in central midfield. But we have also another two in central attack. There’s too much probability Higuain/Aguero will fail for several reasons. One of them should have been left at the expense of Icardi/Martinez.

    3. Pezzella over Rojo.

    Good to see Caballero, Armani, Tagliafico, Acuna, Ansaldi, Lo Celso, Salvio, Meza, Pavon, Lanzini, Dybala. There’s few players that, according to defenders of perennial status quo, should have never been there. But they are.

12. The list is not that bad. But really feel sad for the omission of E.Perez! Yes, no Icardi is expected since the friendly list announced. But personally i don’t like the idea of snubbing Enzo & Perotti. This 2 Argentine always give it all for the team.

    Btw, Inclusions of Maxi, Acuna, Salvio, Pavon, Ansaldi & Armani makes me hopeful about WC. As we will have potential good backups this time on bench.

    However unfortunately the most doubtful part of our team is our Attack! Both Dybala & Pavon will be on bench. This left an unfit Aguero & a chocker in the starting Xl based on rotation policy. Only hope is to see a fit Aguero with form. Otherwise the result will be as same as 2014 WC.

16. You guys need to relax. None of us are coaches..Let the man do his job. I am pretty sure if i go back 4 years ago, prior to Sabella to the last WC, in the archive folder, there was a similar outcry when our final 23 players were selected. Please don’t give me this Messi and Friends bullshit either…

    Lets not forget, Masch, Banega and Rojo will not be starters which has already been proven by Samp’s recent lineups (exception of the Spain game). I know Masc may not be the same player that he once was 4 years ago but given his experience and fighting spirit, he can’t be a valuable asset in that locker room?? Please don’t tell me his play has diminished to the point where he’s not even serviceable as a back-up? Quite frankly, we have had older and less decorated players than Masc make the final roster in previous WC (Juilo Cruz, Caniggia, Martin Palermo, Veron)…

    As much as people hate Banega for his inconsistent play, he’s still a decent player and one of the better midfielders we have.. The guy had a decent season for Seilla and now he’s not good enough to be selected as a back-up? Newsflash: MOST BACK UP ARE NOT GREAT so why are we expecting greatness from Banega? The only questionable selection is Rojo since he has been injured and his form has dipped drastically. He’s a very physical CB/LB which can be useful I guess ( assuming he sees the field)…

    Anyway, I am glad the list came out so we can stop suggesting “our favorite” players. I have seen some posters even go as calling Centurion, Meza, Perotti, A Gomez A MUST. A must over who? DiMaria who has been a staple for years and who is still performing at a high level?

    We need to be more realistic.. At the end of the day, there are only 23 spots available. Could Samp may have made a few changes/swaps here and there to improve the overall balance? Yes but as it has been the case historically, with every coach from different nations, familiarity and preference always comes into play so we all need to accept it.

    Unless something drastically chance, we can expect the following lineup (4-2-3-1):

    Mercado – Ota – fazio – Tag/Acuna

    Biglia – Lo Celso

    Lanzi/Pavon – Messi- DiMaria

    Aguero

    Aside from maybe Biglia, we don’t have anyone performing better at their respective positions.

18. Good squad – Probably the best among the recent 3 WC squads. Good to see young players such as Dybala, Meza, Pavon, Lanzini etc. I would have just made two changes – Pezella for Rojo & Battaglia/Pizarro for Ansaldi/Mercado. Although we have three backup ups as CB in Rojo, Mascherano & Mercado, I’m sure it would be terrible to see one of the CBs to leave injured. Atleast we should have had another strong dedicated CB. May be Sampaoli went in for versatility because he is much more expert and experienced than any of us, paper coaches. LOL 😀

    Certain players who deserved a spot missed out such as Paredes, Papu Gomez, A Correa, Icardi, Lautaro, Centurion, Battaglia, Pizarro, Lema, Pezella etc. They simply lost the spot because others were simply better or more suited to our style of play. Some of the blame should goto the players themselves. I believe players such as Lautaro, Lema, Centurion should have moved into Europe a year ago to show their worth.

    It’s a pity that Sampaoli didn’t get enough time to try out talented players such as Ascacibar (who I believe is the best DM for our play style), Centurion, Jara, Lema etc. He definitely arrived a year late.

    I wonder if Sampa is planning to play Salvio as a DM. Curiously, the order in the list suggests so. May be I’m reading too much into it.

    We have enough fire power. I hope everyone stays healthy and reach the world cup in best shape and form. We have Messi & if rest of the players can work hard and complement him, we can bring the cup. Vamos Argentina!

22. For me this team is very much acceptable but Icardi instead of Hugain. Obviously the reason for Icradi’s exclusion may be the fierce attack from Maradona and company who never accept Icardi’s inclusion in NT.

23. Certainly enough to win the tournaments. Lots of people here are just looking at Spain friendly and underestimate us. In tough qualification, we came third and we beat countries like Colombia comfortably( which is considered as strong team by media) and we have unrest in coaching position than any country. If we play our heart, we can certainly win the world cup.     GKs–>Only one out of Romero and Caballero could have been picked along with Armani and 3rd keeper could have been a young one but we don’t have many options .

    Defense->2018 will be completely opposite to 2014. We were very defensive in 2014. Even our bench was full of defensive players. Sampaoli has opted to go full offensive in 2018. Only 7 defenders and only are 6 full time defenders. Acuna is not a full time full back. Otamendi and Fazio our starting CBs and Rojo is going to be their direct back up. Rojo better get his 2014 form back or we are all screwed as its very unlikely that both of our main CBs are going to play all 7 games. Mercado also can play CB as can Mascherano but Masch is not going to play full 90 mins for obvious reasons. Ansaldi’s selection make sense!! Ansaldi Salvio Acuna Mercado Tagliafico Rojo all can play as full backs!! Wow!!!

    Midfield->Very attacking unlike Sabella’s team again!! Defense being our Achilles heel Sampaoli could have gone with one more defensive midfielder but he clearly thinks Masch can be direct back up for Biglia. Very surprised Perroti getting the boot. He could have been a very good sub for Di maria. Too many attacking players.

    Attack->
    Well He could have gone for Icardi instead of Higuain but with Mascherano still in the team that would have never happened . Lets all pray Aguero can keep himself fit for 7 matches. Otherwise Higuain will lead our attack . He might score couple goals but when it will matter the most he can’t be trusted . Finger’s crossed. Hopefully Higuain will redeem himself and win us the cup. Dybala inclusion is good. Had Sampaoli picked good and young def-mids Messi and Dybala could have played together but Dybala is going to be a pure sub.

Well not a bad team heavy on the attacking side weak on the defensive side could have been more balanced but from now on we can only hope and pray that Sampaoli’s Copa win wasn’t a fluke and he knows what he is doing!!!

25. Overall, not a bad team. I just feel a little uncomfortable about the front line. Our midfielders or wingers do not score too many goals. To have a successful WC, we need 1-2 goals from players like – Di maria, Los Celso, Banega, Pavon, Fazio, Otamendi. If these people pitches in with a goal here and there we will be fine. I think we will see a safe line up for first match and then see how things go from there.

Lo celso should not be used as Defensive midfielder he is going to make mistakes in that position.He is not good in defending in his own half he should be used as attacking midfielder.He is good at winning the ball in opposition half where he seems relax.Emery made that mistake against Real Madrid so not to be repeated.Banega is more good in that position

27. Last world cup Mascherano was at his peak and biglia supported him nicely but they had a tremendous support from hard working Enzo Perez. Four years passed. Mascherano won’t be having the energy to play seven intense matches. Biglia coming from injury. Who is our Enzo Perez this time. Sad that Sampaoli learned nothing from Nigeria and Spain games. Sampaoli believe attack win matches but it’s defense that wins the cup. Rojo who did nothing in qualifiers and not played a year got selected. Enzo the second best player after Messi against Ecuador dropped. Always felt Messi never appreciated Enzo. Apart from Mascherano and Biglia no one got the defensive mentality to keep their urge to go forward. Anyhow..all the best to our beloved blues.. but in future we should go for a coach from Europe..

    • There are a few players, who could be used in different roles. Mascherano can be both I believe. But not as a starter always.

    • Average? Don’t exaggerate. A pretty good team, but nowhere near to Brazil, Spain, Germany, France, England & Belgium who have world class club level team.

      But with Messi, this team is more than enough to bring the cup if the rest of the players work hard and complement Messi on the field. We need everyone to defend together and our attackers not to miss any chances.
