Four players are suspended for Argentina as coach Lionel Scaloni could be calling up some emergency players from the local league.
There were four players which were yellow carded in the 2-1 win vs. Chile and will miss the next match against Colombia on Tuesday. Nicolás Tagliafico, Nicolás Otamendi, Rodrigo De Paul and Leandro Paredes all got a yellow card and will miss the next match.
As for those hit by COVID, Lionel Scaloni himself tested positive for COVID despite recovering from it. However, Scaloni wasn’t the only person to miss Argentina’s 2-1 win vs. Chile on Thursday. Pablo Aimar, who is also part of Scaloni’s coaching staff tested positive for COVID and did not travel with the team.
For the players, Alexis Mac Allister tested positive and Emiliano Buendia was in close contact with someone who tested positive. Both remained in Argentina for the 2-1 win. For those that did take part in the team, there were also some players suspended.
Lucas Ocampos and Maxi Meza both displayed COVID symptoms and did not make the bench. As we reported, Ocampos also has an ankle injury and is a doubt for the match against Colombia on Tuesday.
Rumors are circulating that Argentina national team coach Lionel Scaloni will make emergency call-ups to the team. One of the players that is being rumored is Enzo Fernandez of River Plate with potentially others from the local league.
The only positive that I can think of in this situation is that Scaloni have a chance to understand his player selection flaws. He has made good selection decisions and he has been making bad selection decisions. What is the use of Andrada/Armani, Meza, Perez (at least he can play) when you overlooked Sensi, Lanzini, and maybe other potentials? Thanks God that Lisandro was introduced, although after a long overlook to take the mantle today. Where is his other favorite, Roberto Pareyra now a days?

Calling new players now won’t help much because they have no time to prepare and will probably not ready for the next game. I think the only way is to move Lisandro Martinez to the midfield and to play with the 3 remaining CB in a 343 in order to keep the balance: Emiliano Martinez-Nehuen Perez, Pezzella, LMQ-Molina, Lisandro Martinez, Lo Celso(or Papu if he is not injured), Acuna-Di Maria, Lautaro, Nico Gonzalez. I think with the pressing from Lautaro and Nico Gonzalez, the intensity from the winger backs, it is going to be ok.
And argentina will lose 100%

That is why I am against picking useless waste of space like Meza! I am going to go out on a limb and also say that either give Julian Alvarez adequate time to prove himself in the next upcoming matches or drop him from the team and bring in a proper striker. World cup is not a time or a place for young players to gain experience from the bench, especially when our striker department doesn’t have any proper backups. He needs more time in competitive matches to improve his decision making, at times he looked like a under-19 player playing with big boys yesterday.
We need midfielders and CB’s if all the questionable players will miss only Nehuen Perez, Pezzella, Lisandro Martinez, Lo Celso and Papu remain. Enzo Fernandez, Almendra and Gaston Avila my bets.
Those would be good call-ups.
