Argentina U20 national team coach Javier Mascherano has announced the starting eleven for the team’s match vs. Uzbekistan at the U20 World Cup.

Javier Mascherano has named his eleven players which will play in Argentina’s opening match against Uzbekistan. Goalkeeper Gómes Gerth gets the start and it’s a back four of Giay, Di Lollo, Gómez and Barco.

Mascherano has went with a European based midfield with Máximo Perrone of Manchester City, Mateo Tanlongo of Sporting CP and Valentín Carboni of Inter. Up front it’s Matías Soulé, Véliz and Brian Aguirre. Here is the line-up:

Gómes Gerth; Giay, Di Lollo, Gómez, Barco; Perrone, Tanlongo, Valentín Carboni; Soulé, Véliz and Brian Aguirre

  1. Carboni, Aguirre, Barco were the standout players.
Concern Areas – GERTH ( inspite of 2 saves. He jus looks always ready for an error) , overplaying while building from back ( Foythisque moments🤐) , midfield dosent look aerially strong. I feel we need a Masche kind of destroyer there. Didnt get impressed with Peronne,Tanglolo , Redondo, Miramon or Infantino.
Positives – marauding full backs, Veliz scoring early in tournament, Individual brilliance of the top3, temperament to come back after being a goal down.

Overall Masche team dosent look good for real strong teams. But 3 points in 1st game is the best start possible in a tournament & hopefully we improve like Scaloni’s boys. We do have an ace up our sleeve with the crowd support.

    • Uzbek is strong. They are the Asian champ. The game could have gone either way. What Masche needs to fix are
      1. counter attack defense as Giay and Barco overlap a lot. 2 disciplined DM are needed
      2. Aguirre and Soule must switch position
      3. give a chance to Lavagnino or Claa

Anyway I have bo doubt that after this tournament, Barco will play for Scaloni. He is Juan Sorin reborn.

  2. Really like Aguirre, his quickness and turns and movement. Unique style of dribbling and finding space. Wish he had gotten the ball a little more.

    • Yes, fully agreed about Aguirre as with Carboni defenetly the best 2 from this game as were fullbacks, when attacking, but when defending both did do some misstakes like also way too many players in this match as victory and 3 points were the most important, but i’m very surprised of the amount misstakes from the team in over all as some were completly unacceptable, well i hope they work on this aspect as i rather see them next without any misstakes like they did today….also not really sure at all about the team as i’m not really expecting anything more than qualifying from the group stage’s, but honestly if continued with such amount of misstakes, well obviously you will get punished specially with playing Gerth one can’t simply hope nothing from him as he did improve in second half, but not that much to be a super keaper in the next games to follow etc…so i quess the only Remedy will be to tighten up defence and the middfield at once and, maybe try to score on counter and from set pieces etc..,

    • Yeah kind of odd, Aguirre can play in both sides but over his career he’s done the left much more. And I know very little of Soule on the left

    • I think it is because Masche is obsessed with the typical idea of “playing wingers on the opposite wing of their dominant leg to cut inside”. But it definitely hasn’t worked well for us. Both Soule and Aguirre don’t look comfortable in their positions, especially Soule.

      • Yep, at the end of the day given how talented both Soule and Aguirre are I don’t think we need to do any tactical tricks to get an advantage because 100% of the time they will be better than any Uzbek or Guatemalan player. Keep them comfortable and they will do their magic. Wish we kept it simple and just played them on their sides

  3. & u gave Gomez Girth the supreme opportunity to train with the NT during Qatar WC, hmm???? So shameful!! 🤣🤣😭😭🤣🤣

  4. Our insistence to build play from behind is a double edged sword. Beautiful for sure. But chance of error v high at a U20 level. Gerth in 1st half & Soule in 2nd half gave ball away in very dangerous spots.

  5. Not impressed Tanlongo guy, he looks like old school holding midfielder doesn’t have good skills as modern day defensive midfielders who can create can pass breaking lines btw Valentín Carboni looks really good player .

  6. Entertaining match.
The First Goal by Uzbekistan, everyone thought it was an offside, even the scorer.
Gerth should have saved it though.

  7. Vamos Carboni ! Though the misstake’s MASCHE’s team have allready donein thefirst half are unacceptable specially from Gomez-Gerth and the rest of the defence as it seems only Barco is doing fine on the right side as Giay and Argentina may have been super lucky, that the penalty was not given to Uzbekistan as Giay had picked an yellow before, though, that did not look like an yellow….

    • One of the best players in the first half for sure, been good in Boca as well despite a couple of defensive weaknesses in some games

      • One good thing is both goals had a full back assist. Also happy Veliz got into score sheet early. CF wearing goal scoring boots early in tournament is always welcome.

        • Agreed. I remember Veliz was criticized a bit on here during the Sudamericana and he was one of the lower points in attack which seemed strange to me because he actually has scored several goals both before that tournament and since then. Having him score today makes more sense. I think the Sudamericana left a slightly skewed image of him and he’s more than what we saw then. He is one of the top young strikers in the league now as well.

  8. Superb entertainer. U20 matches are full fury games both sides. Soule’s smart holding play had a role in both goals. Keeping Gerth aside ( looks a walking disaster) , its been entertaining for sure.

  9. Gomes Gerth doesn’t seem to have any potential to be our goalkeeper in the future at all. The goal they scored is one you can not allow EVER as a goalkeeper, not even 1 out of 100 shots. It’s his near post. Fortunately we now scored two. Our players are much better, let’s keep going and get the three points

  10. Hey guys, I promised a few months ago a list of the top youngsters in Argentina and I have worked on it sporadically though it’s not fully finished. Still, I figured I might post what I have for now since the world cup U20 is about to start. There have been some new appearances like Gauto and Aguirre who we’ve known about for a while but has cemented himself more. Now that I’ll watch many of these players play I’m curious to see how accurate my analysis is, some of which I got from watching compilations, others games, others reading up on other’s people’s analysis, stats, etc. I’m open to find new things out about a few of these players or even be proved wrong on some of the analysis I did.

The obvious (many from Europe or already called up)

    Garnacho – Man U / 18 / 5’11 / Right Footed / LW – You all already know about him so I’ll skip
Luka Romero – Lazio / 18 / 5’5 / Left Footed / 10/RW – Scored his first Lazio goal a month ago and his coach has just become a little more open to giving him more minutes. Really good dribbler and drives forward when he sees openings. So far from the few times I saw him play for Lazio I’ve been left wondering about 1-2’s, crossing, or other types of passes, since it seems that he only does simple passes when he chooses not to dribble. It may have to do with his coach not giving him the necessary confidence but I want to see what else he offers. I always heard he was a ten although Lazio play him on the right
Soule – Juventus / 19 / 6’0 / Left Footed / RW – Good dribbler and an assister. Likes to cut onto his left (we saw him nearly two goals the other day as a starter doing that). Good free kick taker. Overall not much you guys know but definitely someone to analyze as he starts gaining confidence and developing through first team football this year youtube.com/watch?v=1MMWL0hqNSs&t=168s
Nicolas Paz – Real Madrid / 18 / 6’1 / Left Footed / CM/10 — Also a great dribbler with good control and good vision. Already made the bench for Real and made his Castilla debut. The sudamericano will be a good opportunity to assess him better. I really like his movement and his style of dribbling and controlling the ball is unique.
Valentín Carboni – Inter Milan / 17 / 5’11 / Left Footed / 10/CF/RW – Good at playing forwards on with through balls and also a good ball recoverer. Creative in and around the box. Has already gotten a few first team minutes.
Joaquín Blazquez – Stade Brestois / 21 / 6’4 / Right Footed / GK – Naturally as a young goalkeeper it’s kind of hard to know his ceiling and he also has few first team games. Still, he kept two clean sheets for Stade Brestois recently, one in the Coupe de France and the other in Ligue 1. His club is in danger of relegation and he is still on loan from Talleres so we’ll see what happens soon. One to keep an eye on in the coming years.
Bruno Amione – Sampdoria / 21 / 6’1 / Left Footed / CB – Was bought by Hellas Verona from Belgrano in 2020 and had a really good loan spell at Reggina in Serie B. After sitting the bench for a chunk of the season he began to get minutes and was really loved by the fans from some of the snooping I did. Of course it doesn’t mean much to play well in the Serie B but if he was poor there he’d be pretty disregardable. Now he got a loan move to Sampdoria in Serie A and despite their relegation he has settled as a starter. Could be a backdoor possibility for a future center back after Medina, Perez, Senesi, and Balerdi. Good in the air. He’s also been converted into a defensive makeshift left back in some games this season.
Gastón Ávila – Royal Antwerp / 21 / 6’0 / Left Footed / CB – Aggressive and loves to go to the ground to dispossess the opposition with high tackling numbers at every club he’s been. Decent long passer and good in the air too. Had a bit of a poor spell on his return to Boca with limited opportunities but is now a starter in Royal Antwerp. Curiously, he’s only playing as a makeshift LB as a starter so far though primarily he’s a CB. Remember he was one of Scaloni’s young picks over a year ago for the November international break. Also the younger brother of Chimy Avila youtu.be/E6SCHYZZAdg / youtube.com/watch?v=mqnKnqPe0Ns
Mateo Tanlongo – Sporting Lisbon / 19 / 5’11 / Right Footed / DM – One of Rosario Central’s many promising young players this year, a really intelligent and tactically mature player that likes to play between the center backs and help deal with counter attacks from the opposing team. Already made his Sporting debut. Seems like a tidy and reliable player especially if you want to build up with a “three at the back”. youtube.com/watch?v=d9HaEpXD2CI
Carlos Alcaraz – Southampton / 20 / 5’9 / Right Footed / CM – I already spoke about him a bit but really good at driving through the midfield when he sees space, good passer, lively when participating in attack, good vision, good free kick taker. youtube.com/watch?v=bdVDUyErcg0&t=169s
Maximo Perrone – Manchester City / 20 / 5’10 / Left Footed / DM/CM – Guardiola said he likes how he turns and uses his body. From what I’ve seen good passer and good vision, and intelligent player too. He barely made his Velez debut over a year ago so he’s been kind of an unknown quantity for a while, it’s hard to tell just how much he can grow but I think he can surprise us in the next couple of years given his quick trajectory so far.
Agustín Giay – San Lorenzo / 19 / 5’11 / Right Footed / RB – He’s been used as a more attacking RB, even more like a right wing back at times. Not super skilled in any particular area that has impressed me but could grow into a solid Montiel type player.
Julian Fernandez – Velez Sarsfield / 18 / 6’0 / Left Footed / RW/LW – Skillful, good dribbler, has goal threat, and good pace. Only made his initial Velez debut a year ago against River so excited to see what he can do in another year.
Valentín Gomez – Velez Sarsfield / 19 / 6’0 / Left Footed / CB – In my opinion one of the best young CB’s that are actually already in the first division, taking away the ones already in Europe I’d say he’s the best for his general age group that we’ve already seen professionally. While he wasn’t perfect he was one of the few defenders that wasn’t embarrassing in the sudamericana. As far as his qualities what I’ve seen there isn’t anything special to remark that isn’t included in what you would imagine from a solid, all round, decent height center back.
Ezequiel Fernández – Boca Juniors / 20 / 5’10 / Left footed / DM – I watched a few games at Tigre this season and I was pretty impressed. Really good at tackling to break the play and also building into attack. High interception and tackling numbers. One of those players that will put their body on the line or do whatever it takes to win back the ball. Really hope Varela is sold soon so that he can develop. Having the both of them plus Fausto Vera do give some more hope into a future DM, though it is important to say that ideally HE IS NOT A SINGLE DM. Ibarra has made him play as a sole DM at times this season and as expected those were his worse games, never was he a full DM and he is 100% a double pivot player that can support the more defensive midfielder without being the last line before the center backs but also give a lot more going forward. Coming off the bench against Racing in the final he still managed to be #1 in fouls received, chances created, duels won, and passes to the opposition half while #2 in ball recoveries, really involved player.
Ignacio Maestro Puch — Atletico Tucuman / 19 / 5’11 / Right Footed / FW — Highly rated striker who has just started to get into the first team this year. I watched the game against Rosario Central where he scored a goal and when he came on he created a ton of danger and changed the attack. A goalscorer with really good physicality and a smooth passer too. Really incisive in the box and good positioning. Excited to watch him in the sub 20. Maybe one of the best projects we have in that position these next couple of years. youtu.be/ttkwubH0WSM
Alan Varela – Boca Juniors / 21 / 5’10 / Right Footed / DM – I have to preface what I’m about to say by mentioning with what we’ve seen from the year so far he’s been in his worse form, but it’s not hard to imagine given the current professional state Boca is in. I still expect him to be sold this June-August and next year at the latest. He is a simple player that can dictate the tempo with simple passes out from the base of midfield and help break up play. — DISCLAIMER: I wrote this early on in the season and he’s still in very poor form for Boca, but it could overall have a lot to do with temporary form combined with being surrounded by a poor team at large.
Bruno Zapelli – Belgrano / 20 / 5’11 / Right Footed / 10 – Classic #10 who is only just playing in the top division. I actually had some doubts about him for a while because it seems Belgrano fans were frustrated with him last year but he’s easily their most talented player right now. Really good dribbler with a unique style and movement and also a good creator. Good vision. Intelligent, creative ideas like flicks and one touch passes. It was kind of hard to tell what his ceiling was for a while because he was only in the second division (often getting less than 90 minutes this last season in the second division despite having good physicality) and I still don’t really know if he has an upper South American football future or a European and NT future, but that should become a bit clearer with this season. Luckily we still have a chance at him unlike Retegui who is tied to Italy. youtube.com/watch?v=N93sGDFky54
Maximo Carrizo – New York City FC / 14 / 1,60m (transfermarkt) / Left Footed / CM/10 – Already played a first team friendly game at 14 for NYCFC. Highly rated and already training with professionals at his age. Was already part of the U17’s for Argentina.
Lucas Roman – 18 / Left Footed / CF/RW – Like most people he only really popped up on my radar when Barcelona bought him. In fact the last time Ferro made headlines was when they nearly got promoted but were robbed of it through shady Barracas Central points in 2021, they then sold several key players and I’m surprised that after that they still produced Lucas Roman. Really recent player. Very technical player with great dribbling and control. Very mobile. Really good finisher at long distance. Really versatile and interchangeable which made him seem ideal for Barca. Let’s hope the move doesn’t end up like Ramos Mingo.
Gianluca Prestianni – Velez Sarsfield / 17 / Right footed / 5’5 / LW/RW/10 – easily one of the top 5 under 20 talents in my opinion. Incredible dribbler and crazy acceleration to get past opponents. I also like that he’s very complete and is a great passer/crosser on top of being skillful on the ball. Look at his assist against Banfield to win the game for Velez in only his second official game youtube.com/watch?v=hF0OKzGHm4g&t=9s and his debut against Estudiantes which really impressed me, he was completely capable of making a difference against professionals at the age of 16 in the top flight. Recently scored his first goal which pushes that further, you can see his talent eclipses any need to adjust to the level of Argentina’s top flight as he effortlessly jukes the goalkeeper youtu.be/d0CSylIVTSc and this compilation video with a lot of clips from reserves or lower divisions youtu.be/U4-1pmyYtTk

    Players I haven’t gotten to:
Exequiel Zeballos – Boca Juniors / 20 / 5’9 / Right Footed / LW/RW (has had a lot of injury problems recently so maybe it’s a good thing I didn’t do too much analysis because no idea how much he’ll recover his level or talent or when)
Juan Gauto (quite new but I might post a bit more information on him when I see him if we don’t get enough of him this world cup)
Ignacio Miramon — another really new player that I’ll also update on when I know more, but gives me a lot of hope for the future DM role along with other players I’ve mentioned
    Valentin Barco
    Santiago Castro
    Santiago Hidalgo
    Toto Aviles
    Hezze
    Federico Redondo

    Younger generation:
    Claudio Echeverri
    Agustin Ruberto
    Ian Subriare
    Franco Mastantuono
    Camilo Rey Domenech

If you feel like writing a novel, find your own f*ing space. I for one have ZERO interest in scrolling through ten freaking pages of bullshit write ups on players that most likely will amount to nothing.

      • For one you don’t have to scroll up or down because the new comments will be to the top of the page. It’s just for people who are curious about a certain player and nobody has to read the whole thing. I mentioned writing about some young players a few months ago and people actually were looking forward to it. It was actually very common to see comments even longer than this on mundo for a while. If you like things that are short and sweet switch to instagram or twitter. I have no reason to tailor my comments to you

        • This forum is not designed for someone to hijack it and write a damn novel about this crap. Honestly, it serves no purpose. Glad you have so much time on your hands to investigate this crap. But most of these players other than a handful will amount to zero. All it takes is 5 minutes to watch this game and you can tell who will have potential and who is trash.

      • About Prestianni you have reason to think that, I wish there was some way to make my writing bold and make his section of my analysis stand out because I think he is really truly special, a standout gem even among a list of talented players

    • also really curious to see Tanlongo, Gauto, and Miramon in particular this U20 WC and get a better idea of them personally.
