Gonzalo Montiel scores winning penalty for Sevilla in Europa League triumph

Gonzalo Montiel scored the winning penalty for Sevilla as they lifted the Europa League.

Montiel did exactly as he did in the World Cup final for Argentina in the penalty shootout. But before the drama of the penalty shootout, there was an Argentine who found the back of the net in regulation.

Paulo Dybala scored the first goal of the match to give AS Roma the 1-0 lead in the Europa League final. A ball into the Argentine and he would score with his left foot the goal to give them the 1-0 lead.

Dybala was not fully fit and did not complete the match and Sevilla would draw level. Not many chances were created and the match went to penalty kicks.

Lucas Ocampos was the first of three Argentine penalty kick takers for Sevilla. He would score his penalty to give Sevilla the lead on penalty kicks. Cristante would draw AS Roma level and Erik Lamela would make it two penalty kicks scored for Sevilla.

AS Roma would miss their next two penalty kicks and the last penalty would fall to Gonzalo Montiel. His penalty was initially saved by the goalkeeper but the referee ordered for it to be retaken.

The Argentine would take the penalty and he went the same way he did against France in the World Cup final as he scored and Sevilla were once more crowned champions.

Congratulations to Gonzalo Montiel, Lucas Ocampos, Erik Lamela, Marcos Acuña and Papu Gómez!

  1. Feel bad for Dybala who scores and put Roma ahead, too bad he was injured and only played like 60 minutes. He also came from scoring of a FK. Sevilla simply has that winning mentallity in this particular tournament.

3 Argentines took the penalty and all scored. Although Montiel got a second chance due to the goalie being out of the line early. Ocampos penalty was super chill.

  2. New Sevilla coach likes Argentina players and using them more than Sampaoli even. Congrats to Sevilla
