Ángel Di María could play his last home match with the Argentina national team tonight.

Di María could be playing his last match in Argentina with the national team against Uruguay in Thursday’s World Cup qualifier. Argentina play Brazil after their match against Uruguay and their next two matches would be in March.

The two friendly matches in March would be played in Europe and Argentina’s next matches would be the 2024 Copa America which is where Di Maria is expected to retire from the national team.

Already 35 years old, Di María played his first match with the Argentina national team against Paraguay at home in September 2008, a 1-1 draw. His first goal with Argentina at home was in a 5-0 win vs. Canada before the 2010 World Cup.

  1. Dude, just thinking about Di Maria retiring from the national team is making me so sad! He’s been one of my favorites for a long time. And he seems like the key to our success winning trophies. (Kinda like a Scotty Pippen that supports Michael Jordan thing).

I would love to see him keep playing for as long as possible because I think he still has some good years ahead of him. But you never know, sometimes guys who are speedy like him have a hard time when they can’t go as fast as they used to.

    • Yup! Dimaria, Aguero, Iniesta , Xavi.. if it was any other time they would be considered one of the greatest but they were both unfortunate and fortunate to be born and played in Messi’s era and never received the recognition they deserved ! All could have won atleast one BallonDor each! In 2014, Dimaria had an insane season for Madrid and Argentina would have 100% beaten Germany if he was fully fit!

  2. The Clásico Río de la Plata is a special game, going back many decades.

Uruguay likely to line up like this: Rochet; Nández, Araujo, Caceres, Olivera; Valverde, Ugarte; Pellistri, De La Cruz, M.Araujo; Darwin Nunez

Suarez who is called up again and in good form will likely get minutes.

What do we know about this Uruguay team and players? Bielsa has been doing well with them so far. His teams run like crazy and press a lot. He is a prisoner of his own system though because he is rarely pragmatic. Scaloni in that sense has Bielsa DNA but with some necessary tweaks that made him more successful on the big stage.

Rochet is a decent goalie playing in the Brazilian league. Nandez is more of a makeshift RB as he started his career playing as a wide midfielder, he’s not a bad player but not world class. Araujo is a really good defender and a key player for Barcelona. Caceres has a lot of experience. Gimenez from Atletico Madrid might be available to play too after his injury and he is a Simeone type of player that takes no prisoners.

Their LB Olivera, is good defensively, as a Napoli fan I can confirm that but he would have to cope with Messi so there’s that.

Valverde is an elite player and will be their midfield general. De La Cruz is a well known River Plate commodity and every now and then he produces flashes of brilliance. Pellistri is a promising youngster but on the fringes of MU. Don’t know much about Ugarte and Maxi Araujo though.

Darwin Nunez is a dangerous player but is also known to miss important chances. Cuti and Otamendi will have to stick close to him.

Overall, I foresee a physical game. We should have enough firepower to break them down, especially at home. At some point Uruguay might get tired of constant running, although given that the average team age is young (the only way to make it work for Bielsa’s approach), it might take them a while to run out of gas. Fideo in the last 15 minutes can work some magic.

  3. Tbh I don’t believe him. He will be there in 2026. The only way he won’t be called is if Scaloni doesn’t call him anymore. Same with Messi tbh. They can’t resist. Di María said he’d retire after the WC 2022 but is still here. Messi said he’d never leave Barca, “retired” from the nt in 2016, said he wasn’t sure he’d continue after 2026 and he’s still here.

  4. If this is the case then he should start on the left instead of Nico and get subbed out with the fans standing ovation. I understand that Nico defends more and that is why Scaloni starts him…but this is bigger than the match against Uruguay and bigger than a qualifier. this may be fideos last match in Argentina wearing the glorious kit… I will be crying tonight as my favorite player of the last 15 years or so bids farewell to the pitch in his country.

  5. Media says that Argentina match will be streamed via FanCode app in India but the app isn’t showing I think. Any thoughts Indian Argentina fans

  6. He was saying same thing before world Cup that he will retire after world Cup but I understand the excitement after winning world Cup to continue playing who won’t ? i don’t blame him that he has changed his mind after abuse he was getting Argentina fans from the worldwide
For all the years was under performing in the nt colours but he delivered big time when we needed most fair play to him and well done to him.
