AS Roma secured their second straight victory in Serie A with a 1-0 win over Pisa on Saturday at the Arena Garibaldi, thanks to a decisive goal from Argentine forward Matías Soulé.
The 22-year-old combined brilliantly with compatriot Paulo Dybala to deliver the winning strike. In the 54th minute, Dybala, who had just come on at halftime for Stephan El Shaarawy, drove down the left flank and played the ball into Evan Ferguson. The Irish striker held it up inside the box before laying it off to Soulé, who arrived unmarked on the right and fired a low left-footed shot into the net.
It was Soulé’s first goal of the season, continuing the strong form he showed in preseason, where he scored three times in friendlies against Lens, Everton, and Neom Sports Club. The Argentine youngster has started both of Roma’s league matches so far, including their opening-day 1-0 victory over Bologna. Against Pisa, he not only scored the winner but also led the team in dribbles completed (7), ball recoveries (10), shots (5), fouls drawn (3), and duels won (11)—a complete performance that confirmed his growing importance for the Giallorossi.
Dybala, meanwhile, is being eased back into action by coach Gian Piero Gasperini following surgery on his left hamstring tendon earlier this year. The World Cup winner has come off the bench in both Serie A matches so far as Roma manage his minutes carefully after his long recovery.
Looking ahead, Roma will next face Torino at home on Sunday, September 14. Neither Soulé nor Dybala has been called up for Argentina’s final two CONMEBOL World Cup Qualifiers, with Lionel Scaloni’s already-qualified side set to play Venezuela (September 4) and Ecuador (September 9).
