Argentina national team coach Lionel Scaloni could take nine defenders to World Cup

Argentina national team coach Lionel Scaloni could be taking nine defenders instead of eight to the World Cup.

Lionel Scaloni has some injuries to the team and he could be taking one more defender to the team. According to Gastón Edul, Lionel Scaloni is leaning towards taking nine defenders to the World Cup instead of eight because of the growing number of injuries to defenders.

Cristian Romero is presently out with an injury while Gonzalo Montiel also has fitness issues.

  1. He must take 9 defenders anyway. Roster should have balance. In previous world cups when the number was 23 then 8 was enough. With 26 players roster 9 defenders is the normal.

      • Nice to see you again. Long time passed. Well i consider France and Spain the only teams we are not favorites. France have speed and stamina far better than us and Spain offense that is very hard to be stopped from our not so strong defence line. But football is football and always is not winning the team that considered as favorites.

        • Yes, very happy to hear from you my friend as i wish u and your family all the best! Stay all as healthy and well as you can! I fully agree with as France and Spain being the favorites, but like you said my friend you never know in football and specially at WC. So fingers crossed like allways before. This time Arg will defending their 3rd WC title as it is such long time from, when it last happened at 1990 and without that ”penalty call” Argentina would had won even with key players missing such as CANI forcexample. At 1982 Argentina was not physically on their best, when arriving Spain to defend their first tittle,. This time It will be intresting to see how would team management approach against those very fast and offensively very strong teams such as France and Spain if they will come a cross as i do agree with Argentina’s defense being not so strong as 4 year’s ago as some might be having fitness issues too and facing fast and physically strong offensive teams might become very tricky, but hopefully they will all recover well in time! So i think there lies the biggest test this time and if Argentina can somehow sort this out, then everything is possible, but forsure it will be very hard to win back to back WC, but not impossible my friend. Saludos Ricky

  2. My Favourite 9 Defenders are….
    1. Romero
    2. Lisandro
    3. Balerdi
    4. Otamendi
    5. Zaid Romero.
    6. Monila.
    7. Capaldo
    8. Barco
    9. Nico González..
No need to add 34 years old taglafico and Acuna and over rated montiel.. we should playing 3-4-3/ 5-4-1..we will surpise the world play new tacticks..
    .

    • Barco never shone as a left back. The moment he was put in the midfield, he did an excellent job. Nico Gonzalez as a left back against Lamine Yamal cut a very sorry figure with handballs, fouls, red card et al. IMHO Marcos Senesi and Tagliafico should be in the 9.

  3. It would be beneficial for argentina to consider replacing Montiel and Acuña with Capaldo and Rojas.
