In an interview with GIVEMESPORT, Enzo Fernández — midfielder for Chelsea and the Argentina national team — spoke about his ambitions with the Albiceleste, the possibility of becoming captain one day, the goal of defending the World Cup title in 2026, and the past controversy surrounding a racist video he previously apologized for.
Fernández, who has scored five goals for Argentina, admitted that wearing the captain’s armband is one of his dreams. “Of course I dream about it. I would feel honored to wear the armband, but it’s not up to me. It’s a decision for the coaching staff. I don’t know when it could happen. Time will tell,” he said.
Reflecting on the 2022 World Cup victory in Qatar, he highlighted what it meant to win the trophy alongside Lionel Messi. “Winning the World Cup with Messi was incredible. We were motivated because we grew up watching Leo on TV, and he still had something missing. We were proud to share that moment with him. We wanted to achieve it for him; it was the only thing he didn’t have,” he recalled.
Looking ahead to the 2026 World Cup in North America, Fernández said the team remains focused on trying to repeat as champions. “We’re focused on what’s coming. We know this could be Messi’s last World Cup, so we’ll do everything possible to keep the crown,” he explained.
He added that expectation is part of Argentina’s football identity. “That’s what our national team must aim for. People in Argentina are very passionate and always want more,” he said.
Fernández also spoke about the new generation stepping into the national team setup. “We represent a new group together with Mac Allister and Julián Álvarez. Now young players like Mastantuono and Echeverri are coming in. Attitude and leadership are fundamental. The feeling is positive,” he said.
Discussing his move from Benfica to Chelsea for €121 million, Fernández explained the key moment that pushed the transfer through. “When Chelsea’s interest arrived, I had no doubts. I wanted to make the jump to the Premier League. I told Rui Costa: ‘Please let me fulfill my dream,’ and fortunately he understood. If I hadn’t spoken to him, the move wouldn’t have happened,” he said.
Finally, he addressed the controversy surrounding the racist video he posted on social media, for which he apologized in the past. “It doesn’t reflect my values or my character. I am against all discrimination. I cut my vacation short to meet them face to face. It was a tough moment, but everything is fine now,” he stated.
